JOIN THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGES

The Department of Communication and Languages at NUST fosters innovation and excellence in education, blending theory with hands-on experience to prepare students for the dynamic world of communication. We invite passionate and forward-thinking academics to join our team as Associate Professor: Communication and help shape the future of the field.

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

A Doctorate (NQF Level 10) A Doctorate (NQF Level 10) in Communication or related field, with at least seven (7) years of lecturing experience at tertiary education level and/or industry experience or an equivalent combination of relevant professional experience. Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written. Proven competence in successful sourcing of research or project funding from third-party sources, successful initiation, and management of research projects, curriculum development, and strong management/organisational and mentorship skills. Competence to develop high-quality course materials and teach in at least three of the following courses at both under- and post-graduate levels: Public Relations: Theory and Practice, Mediation Communication, Work Integrated Learning, Persuasion & Propaganda, Communication Theories, Communication for Development, Corporate Communication, Advertising, Conflict Management and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. Competence to assume academic leadership, to establish professional networks, and to maintain links with industry, as well as experience in developing postgraduate programmes. Sound research profile including twenty (20) peer-reviewed journals/books/conference proceedings and successful supervision of at least three (3) Master’s (research) students. A Google Scholar h-index of 6 will be an advantage.

 KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Deliver high-quality and innovative teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, designing assessments that support student success. Supervise and mentor research students, ensuring academic integrity and ethical practice. Lead curriculum development and review to maintain academic relevance and industry alignment. Conduct individual and collaborative research, build a strong publication record, and pursue external funding opportunities. Provide academic leadership, mentor junior staff, and foster a collaborative departmental environment. Contribute to governance through active participation in committees and support institutional quality assurance and strategic initiatives. Assist with student selection, registration, and advising in line with university policies. Lead outreach and capacity-building initiatives with community and industry partners. Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Head of Department or senior leadership.
