Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in European Union Studies

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Dalhousie University invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in European Union Studies, with a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is open with regard to disciplinary specialization, with a primary appointment in one of the Faculty’s 11 Departments.

The successful candidate must have a PhD and an outstanding research profile for their career stage with an innovative and original research programme. They should be an emerging leader in advancing research on European Union Studies with specific interests in one or more of the following areas: health, trade, social cultural policy and other policy areas affecting Europe and its citizens. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated to pursue innovative opportunities and will be open to working in an inter-disciplinary environment.

The holder of the Chair will be expected to enhance the university’s commitment to community development and its relationship with government and service provider organizations and the non-governmental sector. The Chair will also be encouraged to make connections with cross-faculty initiatives at the university and coordinate projects across academic and non-academic sectors to build successful partnerships and pursue external funding to support them. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of obtaining external funding; they should also have a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and to provide leadership in an interdisciplinary environment, develop multi-faceted research projects, and work with graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows. They also will be able to work closely with the Jean Monnet European Union Centre of Excellence (JMEUCE) at Dalhousie University and contribute to its ongoing projects and activities

Dalhousie has also long emphasized European Union Studies, having established and continuously hosted a JMEUCE since 2006, with funding from the European Commission. Through JMEUCE, Dalhousie is currently hosting a Jean Monnet Network in Health Law and Policy (2017-20) and Jean Monnet Chair in Public Diplomacy (2018-2021). The university is also Atlantic Canada’s leading research-intensive university and a driver of the region’s intellectual, social and economic development. Located in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia, with an Agricultural Campus in Truro/Bible Hill, Dalhousie is a truly national and international university, with more than half of our 18,500 students coming from outside of the province. Over 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community that celebrates academic excellence. Further information about the Faculty and the university can be obtained at www.dal.ca/fass.

The CRC program was established by the Canadian Federal Government with the purpose of attracting outstanding researchers to the Canadian university system. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e. the candidate must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, including maternity leave, extended sick leave, etc.) may have their eligibility for a CRC Tier 2 assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Please contact the research grants office and see the CRC website (www.chairs.gc.ca) for more information on eligibility. Dalhousie recognizes that career paths can be diverse and that career interruptions may occur. Applicants are encouraged to include, in their cover letter, an explanation of the impact that any career interruptions may have had on their record of research achievement.

Dalhousie University is committed to fostering a collegial culture grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. In keeping with the principles of employment equity and the CRC program’s equity targets, this position is restricted to candidates who self-identify in one or more of the following groups: Aboriginal or Indigenous people, racially visible persons, women, persons with a disability, and persons of minority sexual orientations or gender identities. (See www.dal.ca/becounted/selfid for definitions of these groups). All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
