The Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP) and the Environmental Studies (ENVS) Program at Tufts University are seeking an assistant professor in Environmental Justice, Resilience, and Sustainability, beginning September 1, 2023.

We seek an interdisciplinary scholar, with the expertise to teach courses integrating environmental management and policy, sustainability transformations, and community engagement. The primary research and teaching interests of the successful candidate should include a central focus on related issues of equity, justice, and participation. Specific focus areas may include but are not limited to: sustainable development; natural resource management policies; physical/social/green infrastructure and nature-based solutions; air, water, soil pollution; energy policy and the transition to zero carbon; water, wastewater, and water scarcity; community resilience and hazard planning; Indigenous/traditional ecological knowledge; environmental racism; and climate adaptation and mitigation. Region and scale of the candidate’s research are open, with some preference for substantive engagement with global south contexts. Candidates with a competency in integrating multiple disciplines and mixed methods, including across the natural and social sciences, are especially encouraged to apply.

The candidate will have a standard course load of four courses per academic year or the equivalent. As part of workload equivalents faculty will also have the opportunity to serve as thesis advisor to master’s level graduate students, mentor undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Studies, and provide active service roles to both UEP and ENVS.

Qualifications

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the position, a wide range of expertise will be considered for the role provided there is a substantial commitment to issues of justice, equity, and community engagement. The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in environmental science, environmental policy, conservation biology, geography, political science, engineering, economics, sociology, anthropology, international relations, planning, or another related field. Candidates with experience and excellence in college-level teaching are preferred. Connections with professional policy and planning practice, or active sustainability initiatives, would be highly valued.

Application Instructions

Submit application materials to Interfolio at  apply.interfolio.com/117628. Initial applications must include a detailed cover letter with research and teaching plans, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three recommenders. Recommenders will only be contacted for candidates who pass an initial screening stage and with prior notification to the applicants. Note that Tufts School of Arts & Sciences is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and candidates should address, across their materials, how they will promote these priorities in their professional career and teaching.

The search committee will begin screening applications on December 15, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.  For questions regarding these positions, please contact Maria.Nicolau@tufts.edu, Department Administrator for UEP.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a background check and meeting the University’s current COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
