Position overview

Position title: Assistant Project Scientist
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2025-26/represented-july-2025-scales/t38-b.pdf. A reasonable full-time salary estimate for this position is $97,300 to $102,000.

Percent time: 50%

Anticipated start: July 1, 2025

Position duration: 1 year, extension dependent on available funding.

Position description

The Energy Institute at Haas is recognized as one of the premier research centers focusing on energy economics and policy. The Energy institute's mission is to help create a more economically and environmentally sustainable energy future through research, teaching, and policy engagement. The diverse expertise of our faculty, students, and staff drive the programs and operations of the Energy Institute. Our faculty are economists in the Berkeley Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley's Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics, UC Berkeley's Energy & Resources Group, UC Davis' Economics Department.

The Energy Institute seeks to hire an Assistant Project Scientist to assist our Affiliated Faculty on a research project modeling the risks of wildfire costs, damage. and impacts of different mitigation strategies.

Work independently under Pl supervision to: 1) produce models of electric utility-caused wildfire ignition, 2) produce empirical analyses of wildfire mitigation strategies and their distributional impacts, and, 3) liaise with utilities, regulators, lawmakers and other constituents to disseminate results and identify critical areas of new research need.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
The minimum qualification is a PhD, or equivalent international degree program at time of application.

Preferred qualifications
Six months of postdoctoral work experience in related field.
An advanced degree in economics, energy engineering, or a related field. Deep expertise in machine learning and econometrics by start date are preferred.
