Dr. Shin's research focuses on cross-cultural studies of families of children with special needs. She also studies early intervention research in developing countries. In collaboration with researchers and clinicians in the Hue Medical College in Hue, Vietnam, Dr. Shin is currently conducting an early intervention project in Vietnam to document the effectiveness of a home visit program carried out by teachers who train parents to work with their children with intellectual disabilities. She also conducts research with Korean immigrant families of children with developmental disabilities in the New York City area to examine how social support, attitudes toward disability, traditional values, and acculturation affect the experiences of parenting. Dr. Shin has published her finding in journals such as Mental Retardation, Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, Asian Journal of Social Psychology and Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development.
