In recent years, our laboratory has been devoted to studying the rules and mechanisms used for the perception of speech. Our understanding of mechanisms employed normally for speech perception has been helped by our research on how we recognize sequences of nonverbal sounds as indicated by some of the titles in the list of publications from our lab. As can also be seen, we have made use of auditory illusions as a tool for examining normal perceptual mechanisms, which are often inaccessible when contributing to veridical perception.
