Research interests, in chronological order, include study of the common-law principles governing marital relations and regulation of speech in antebellum America; the relation between marriage and citizenship law in the first three decades of the twentieth century; and the mid-twentieth century critique of suffragist thought by the woman’s historian Mary Ritter Beard.
