Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a full-time, permanent Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology to join Te Kura Mātai Hinengaro, The School of Psychology.
The University has an excellent research culture and the School of Psychology is recognised as being within the top echelon of psychology departments in New Zealand. The School hosts research laboratories in many of psychology’s specialty areas: cognition, learning, social, cross-cultural, developmental, behavioural pharmacology, neuropsychology, clinical, and forensic psychology. It is also home to the Victoria Psychology Clinic.
Importantly, the School of Psychology has a strong commitment to equity and diversity, and specifically to bicultural practice in research and teaching consistent with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
As the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington is home to parliament, key government agencies and judicial courts, providing excellent opportunities for developing research and professional partnerships with Government and NGOs. In particular, the Clinical Psychology group already has relationships with various external organisations in the Wellington area. The opportunity:
This is an exciting opportunity to join an energetic clinical psychology group with international research and teaching expertise within a world-leading university, and to:
- Contribute to the School’s research, ideally complementing existing research concentrations across the School.
- Add to the School’s existing strengths in teaching at the undergraduate level with a focus on clinical psychological science.
- Contribute to postgraduate clinical training through teaching and supervising clinical psychological science and the practice of clinical psychology (assessment and intervention) informed from a scientist-practitioner perspective.

You will need effective time management and forward planning to balance meeting deadlines and maintain a high standard of service to both students and staff. The ability to remain calm under pressure and thrive working with a diverse range of stakeholders.
We particularly welcome applications from candidates who have practice and research expertise with child psychopathology for this role, but the position is open to all domains of clinical psychology.
The preferred applicant will have:
- A completed PhD in Psychology, or other relevant qualifications commensurate with the seniority of the role and a recognised post graduate qualification in clinical psychology.
- A demonstrated highly developed record of scholarly research including publication in leading refereed national and international journals and/or with leading academically reputable presses (or where appropriate, extensive relevant industry/professional experience).
- Practice experience as a clinical psychologist and be eligible for registration as a clinical psychologist in New Zealand.
- A well-established research agenda.
- Demonstrated evidence of academic leadership (or ability for leadership in their discipline) in teaching and research (e.g. mentoring of colleagues, leading research groups, developing and leading innovative initiatives that encourage or enhance student learning, etc.)
- Demonstrated evidence of successful disciplinary tertiary teaching.
- Demonstrated evidence of attracting and successfully supervising students at Masters and PhD level.
- Demonstrated evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with, mentor and lead colleagues from a diverse range of backgrounds.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the diversity of the student population by the use of different approaches to teaching methods and practice.
- Evidence of an effective contribution to the administration or interests of an organisation, to the wider community and, where appropriate, to the profession.
- Evidence of successfully attracting competitive national and/or international level funding for research (including conference) activities in addition to internal level funding.
