    Job Description


    The Health Sciences Librarian develops and delivers library and research support to faculty, students, administrators, staff, and others in three colleges within the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University (VHS): Ellmer College of Health Sciences, Ellmer School of Nursing, and the Joint School of Public Health. Duties include providing research assistance, instruction, collection development support, and assistance with scholarly communication to academic departments.
    The Librarian serves as the subject specialist and primary contact person between the Libraries and departments, programs, and research centers to which they are assigned. This position is based at the Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library on the campus of VHS, but may also work from Perry Library on the main campus of ODU.

    American Library Association accredited MLS or MLIS degree, or international equivalent

    Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities




      1. Considerable demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

      2. Considerable demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others to address complex questions and devise solutions.

      3. Considerable demonstrated analytical skills including independent problem solving and critical thinking.

      4. Considerable demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a demanding and rapidly changing service-oriented environment.

      5. Basic ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with teaching faculty in assigned disciplines.

      6. Basic knowledge of the information and research needs of assigned disciplines and an understanding of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing and communication.

      7. Basic ability to facilitate access to appropriate information resources by building local collections for the assigned departments. All of these are subjective and open to interpretation.

      8. Basic experience working in a library.

      9. Basic experience teaching, training, or providing educational presentations.

      10. Basic coursework or work experience in health sciences, a related discipline, or health sciences librarianship.

      11. Basic demonstrated experience working collaboratively to build services and develop solutions.

      12. Considerable experience using technologies commonly used in library and office operations.



    Preferred Qualifications



    • Graduate or undergraduate coursework or degree in education or a discipline related to the programs offered by the Ellmer College of Health Sciences, Ellmer School of Nursing, or Joint School of Public Health.

    • Considerable experience working in an academic library or health sciences library.

    • Considerable experience teaching in a library environment, including planning and evaluating instruction to gauge effectiveness.

    • Basic experience identifying and meeting research needs of library users.

    • Considerable demonstrated understanding of current issues in academic communication and publishing.
