  • Research Fellow (with specialization in religion and politics in Asia)

    The School of Social Sciences is inviting applications for the position of Research Fellow. This position is part of the research team led by Associate Professor Francis Lim, for the project, “Modalities of Religious Pluralism in Asia: How Secularism Shapes Religion and Politics” (Funded by Singapore Ministry of Education AcRF Tier 2 Grant). The position is primarily research-based, but the Research Fellow may be requested to teach one undergraduate sociology course per academic year. They will also be expected to conduct field research and supervise data collection. This position comes with funding for field research, data collection and research assistance.


     


    Key Responsibilities




    • Conduct literature reviews on relevant research domains;




    • Assist in preparation of interview protocols, surveys and other research measurements;




    • Conduct field research and data collection in certain Asian countries;




    • Assist in data analysis;




    • Coordinate and manage teams of research assistants;




    • Prepare progress reports, presentations, conference and journal papers, book manuscript as well as other research related documents;




    • Teach one undergraduate course per academic year (if requested);




    • Present research findings at seminars, workshops and conferences.




    • Liaise with external parties such as government agencies and NGOs.




     


    Job Requirements




    • A PhD in Sociology, Politics, or any other related disciplines in the social sciences.




    • Research expertise in religion and politics in Asia.




    • Skills and experience in quantitative (particularly survey design) and qualitative research methods.




    • A promising publication record.




    • Excellent communication skills in speaking and writing.




    • Experience conducting fieldwork/data collection in Asia.




    • A good team player with the ability to work closely with faculty, staff and external collaborators.




    • Good project management skills with the ability to multitask effectively.




    • Ability/willingness (if requested) to teach one sociology undergraduate course per academic year.  




    • Candidates who are able to conduct fieldwork research in China, and are fluent in Spoken and Written English and Mandarin will be considered favourably. This is because the faculty’s mixed methods research involves many Mandarin speaking older adults, this requires not only verbal communication but also written communications skills due to transcription and translation work.
