  • Child Development & Family Ctr Parent Coordinator

    Primary Function
    The Family coordinator position is a full-time, 12 month position.

    The focus of the Family coordinator position is to support ongoing Preschool for All-Expansion (PFA-E) programming focused on the support of families receiving services through the program. The Family coordinator will report to the Practicum and
    PFA-E Director.

    The Family coordinator will demonstrate an understanding of early childhood developmental stages, parenting concerns, community services and agencies. This individual will possess sharp communication skills and be culturally sensitive to the needs and issues of at-risk families. This individual will be responsible for coordinating parent education programs, parent-child interaction nights, and home-based family fun activities. This individual will participate in the initial screening process doing the parent-intake interview and parent education interest survey. This position will be vital in linking families with community resources and services. The Family coordinator will follow the Preschool for All operational calendar.
    Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
    A. Family Engagement and Education: In support of Pre-School For All (PFA) program activities, the family coordinator will take primary responsibility for family engagement and education for families participating in the PFA Program.
    • Collaborate with teachers and instructional leaders to engage families in the classroom and school/site, including meaningful volunteer opportunities
    • Ensure that the program maintains a welcoming environment for families
    • Promote and support effective parenting strategies with PFA families
    • Plan and implement monthly opportunities for family education based on program needs and feedback (includes workshops on health care, mental wellness, dental care, and healthy lifestyles)
    • Ensure alignment of family engagement activities to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Family Engagement Framework
    • Conduct home visits
    • Create a Family Newsletter with information, strategies, and links to community resources
    • Help to manage and develop the program lending library – including parent resources, toys, and books
    • Educate families on kindergarten transition and connect families to community-based resources as appropriate
    • Work with preschool teachers and families to develop a kindergarten transition plan for each child
    • Assist with monitoring attendance at the PFA—E program and communicate with parents on attendance related issues
    • Assist in the facilitation of the Child Development and Family Center Parent Advisory Council

    B. Eligibility, Recruitment, and Program Support: Working with the Practicum and PFA Director, the family coordinator will manage the eligibility and recruitment processes for the program.
    • Support program efforts to identify and recruit the most at-risk children in the community
    • Support families in the screening and enrollment process
    • Collaborate with the classroom teachers and instructional leaders of early learning programs to plan workshops, field trips, child/family events in an effort to engage families in cultural and social enrichment
    • Collaborate with program preschool teachers to develop and support goals to address the development of children

    C. Comprehensive Services and Case Management: Working with the Practicum and PFA Director and PFA teaching staff, the Family Coordinator will provide case coordination to comprehensive services for families served by the PFA program.
    • Work with families to provide referrals, resources, and services that address the needs of families and conduct follow-up to ensure effectiveness of services
    • Work with Instructional Leader to develop Memoranda of Understanding and opportunities for community collaboration (i.e. health, mental health, dental, etc.)
    • Provide mental health consultation for the PFA -E classrooms.
    • Maintain case management files in an orderly fashion
    • Generate reports as needed for the Practicum and PFA director in support of mandated reporting, including reporting of SIS data
    • Plan and assist with kindergarten transition activities (kindergarten visit days, etc.)
    • Communicate and coordinate birth-three transition to PFA-E program
    • Collaborate with program preschool teachers and families to identify medical, dental, mental health, and other needs
    • Maintain ongoing contacts and relationships with community-based services providers to facilitate the efficient referral to services for families enrolled in the PFA program
    • Serve as a liaison to external community-based agencies by representing the PFA program on local social services networks

    D. Facilitator of the NIU Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program: The family coordinator will work closely with Child Development and Family Center (CDFC ) Executive Director and Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Chair on the administration of the
    CCAMPIS grant
    • Responsible for operational management of CCAMPIS program
    • Establish student eligibility for the CCAMPIS program
    • Serve as an appropriate liaison to other support units on campus
    • Serve as a mentor for CCAMPIS student recipients providing academic advising and monitoring through myNIU and
    SSC Campus
    • Connect CCAMPIS students with children at CDFC with other NIU campus resources
    • Provide parent education services to CCAMPIS parents as appropriate
    • Provide case-management services for CCAMPIS recipients as appropriate
    • Supervise graduate assistant in support of NIU CCAMPIS program

    E. Classroom teaching and professional mentoring:
    • Serve as instructor in 1 course per academic year in FACS curriculum. Possible course assignments include HDFS
    482: Child Abuse and Neglect and HDFS 478: Child Welfare Foundations.
    • Assist HDFS family science faculty with the logistics of experiential learning experiences designed for HDFS students in the CDFC
    (i.e. parent education)
    • Serve as intern supervisor at CDFS for HDFS students pursuing studies in family socials ervices.
    • Attend HDFS area meetings with HDFS faculty as needed to discuss the delivery of family social service curriculum
    Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
    Any one or any combination of the following types of preparation:
    1. credit for college course work comparable to that leading to a major in social work or one of the social or behavioral sciences
    2. progressively more responsible social service/counseling work experience at a paraprofessional level under qualified supervision
    that totals 1.0 unit according to the following conversion rates:
    ~120 semester hours (or Bachelor’s degree) of “A” = 1.0 unit
    ~three years of “B” = 1.0 unit
    Amounts of education and experience less than those listed above should be converted to decimal equivalents of 1.0 unit and added together when computing combinations of the different types of preparation.
