The Social Development and Policy Program, School of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, Habib University
invites applications from qualified candidates for Program Director in the interdisciplinary area of Social
Development and Policy. The position will be based in Karachi, Pakistan. The appointee will assume a
combination of administrative, teaching, service and research responsibilities with an annual course load of
Applications are welcome from all social science disciplines. A PhD in Anthropology, Sociology, Economics,
Political Sciences, Development Studies, Gender/Women’s Studies, Education or a related discipline, as well
as strong and collaborative administrative experience committed to interdisciplinary work within a liberal
arts environment is required. Field experience in Social Development Policy as well as familiarity with the
South Asian context will be considered as an asset.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or the promise of excellence in teaching, scholarly
research, publications, service at various levels. The successful candidates will be expected to take a
leadership role in the development, review and delivery of the program.
Ability to teach in multiple areas of social development and policy would be deemed an added strength.
Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as critical thinking and experiential education and
technology enhanced learning would be an advantage.

The central vision of the Social Development and Policy (SDP) program at Habib University is to nurture an
inter-disciplinary and comprehensive understanding of development and social change, both in theory and
practice – one that is firmly rooted in an ethic of care and grounded in a sense of place. The undergraduate
major combines rigorous classroom training in the social sciences and humanities with reflexive and
experiential learning through a fieldwork practicum. Students are exposed to seminal ideas in social and
economic thought. They explore how major development concerns such as poverty, gender inequality,
urbanization and human rights are shaped by historical forces and processes of political power.
