University of Maryland, College Park
|
The Center for Governance of Technology and Systems (GoTech) in the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park seeks to appoint an Assistant or Associate Research Scientist in the Technology Policy field, starting in Fall 2023. Candidates should have expertise in an area of Technology Policy with an interest in exploring topics such as: data privacy and security of technical systems, next-generation computing including quantum, management, and security of critical infrastructures and supply chains, and the development and deployment of smart city infrastructure that includes the use of cloud, IoT, and 5G technologies. The successful candidate should be comfortable working across disciplinary lines including security policy, engineering, computer science, or information studies, and taking a socio-technical approach to exploring governance challenges to the deployment, security, or sustainment of technology. Candidates should have demonstrated interest in using technology policy research to inform public policy that leads to desired societal outcomes. Scholarly knowledge, computational skills, and practical experience across a range of substantive issues are strongly desired.
Candidates should have an outstanding potential for policy-relevant research commensurate with expectations for an assistant or associate research scholar/scientist appointment in a public policy program at a major research university. Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or are in advanced candidacy) with research interests in areas of technology policy. While candidates are not required to have a Ph.D. in a specific discipline, a record of research that bridges the gap between technical or scientific topics and policy is highly sought. Candidates should have a promising capability for fundraising, execution of research projects, project leadership, and delivery of results to governmental and non-governmental leaders aimed at influencing policy outcomes.
The successful candidate will join other scholars within GoTech to expand the school’s research agenda in technology policy. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who can apply qualitative and quantitative methods to policy questions, and who have demonstrated research interests in policy domains including cybersecurity and sustainment of critical infrastructure, supply chain management and security, quantum computing, and smart city infrastructure including IoT, 5G, and Cloud Computing. If interested, the successful candidate may also have opportunities to teach undergraduate, graduate, and Executive-level courses in the future. The School of Public Policy is committed to increasing diversity among our faculty, staff, and student body; across the UMD campus community; and throughout the field of public policy. We embrace diversity in multiple forms, including identity, background, theoretical and methodological orientations, and opinions. Candidates should demonstrate commitment to advancing the professional development of people who will bring diverse perspectives to the field of public policy. Women, non-binary individuals, people of color, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and other underrepresented groups whose hiring would enhance the School’s diversity are especially encouraged to apply.
