Position Overview

The Department of Political Science at the University of Kansas, in collaboration with the university’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES), invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professorship, to begin on August 18, 2021.This appointment is limited for two academic years, ending May 2023. This is a full-time position with a 2:2 teaching load as well as service and research obligations (see below). Applicants are expected to have a PhD in Political Science or a related field by the start date of the appointment.

We seek applications from scholars specializing in international relations, foreign policy, international security, or cybersecurity whose research illuminates Russia and Eurasia’s global influence and situates the region in an international context. Teaching assignments will include existing courses in Russian and Eurasian foreign policy, Russian and Eurasian politics, and the opportunity to develop courses in the candidate’s own areas of expertise. Candidates are expected to contribute to CREES’s interdisciplinary intellectual community and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies as well as political science. In addition, candidates are expected to take part in standing committees in political science and international relations.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the start of the appointment.

Job Description

40% Teaching Responsibilities:
Teach two (2) courses per semester at the undergraduate or graduate level in Political Science.
Advise and mentor undergraduate/graduate students.
40% Research Responsibilities:
Maintain and sustain an active and productive program of research in field of specialization, including scholarly publications and presentations at research conferences.
20% Service Responsibilities:
Service to the Department, the College, the University, and the profession.
All faculty members are expected to act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues. Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) description of teaching philosophy and research agenda in cover letter or attachments; (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in CV; (3) teaching statement; (4) research statement ; and (5) diversity statement. Selected candidates will be asked to provide reference letters later in the process.
PhD in Political Science or a related field by the start date of the appointment.
Teaching experience, demonstrated by evidence of successful teaching and/or plans for future courses.
Development expertise on Russia and Eurasia, demonstrated by dissertation chapters, working papers, or publications of relevance to the region.
