TWO POSITIONS: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR or INSTRUCTOR
INNER CITY SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM
FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK, UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
(Positions # 29622 and 29623)

The Faculty of Social Work of the University of Manitoba invites applications for two positions at the Assistant Professor rank (tenure-track) OR the Instructor rank (eligible for continuing appointment) at the Inner City Social Work site (ICSW). The anticipated start date for these positions is May 1, 2021. Starting salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Candidates who qualify for the Assistant Professor rank will be expected to develop an active research program, and will be given first consideration. Candidates must have at least one social work degree from an accredited university, and must hold or be near completion of a PhD in social work or a related discipline. Duties/responsibilities will include teaching, research and service to the faculty, community and profession. Applicants with experience in community-based and community engaged research, and/or who have demonstrated excellence in post-secondary teaching, will be given favourable consideration.

Candidates for an Instructor position must hold a Master of Social Work degree from an accredited university. The responsibilities of an Instructor are teaching and service.

The ICSW Access Program is designed for mature undergraduate students facing significant social, academic and financial barriers to post-secondary education (e.g., Indigenous peoples, newcomers to Canada, people living in poverty). The ICSW site is located in Winnipeg’s North End and is closely connected with this community and local organizations.

Applicants should have substantial understanding of social policy and social work practice as these relate particularly to Indigenous peoples, inner city experiences, and the settlement of refugees and immigrants. Favourable consideration will be given to applicants with strong knowledge of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures and knowledges, and who are familiar with how to ethically and productively engage and collaborate with these communities

The Faculty of Social Work is one of the largest social work programs in Canada, with a proud history of teaching, research and service spanning almost 75 years. The Faculty offers the Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees in Social Work. We offer an established innovative MSW program based in Indigenous Knowledges. Our Faculty is actively engaged in research and academic publication on a wide variety of topics, and the University of Manitoba is part of the U15 group of research intensive Canadian universities. The Inner City site offers rich opportunities for research related to social work in the inner city. Our programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. We are excited to be in a period of renewal of the Faculty and building for the future. Additional information about the Faculty can be found at: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/social_work/

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. Creating Pathways to Indigenous Achievement is a key priority for the University, as identified in its 2015-2020 strategic plan. The U of M is home to a vibrant Indigenous community, including more than 2,600 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, one of the largest Indigenous student populations in the country. Honoured to be chosen as host of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the U of M is dedicated to advancing Indigenous research and scholarship, and to becoming a centre of excellence for this work.

The University of Manitoba is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from women, racialized persons, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of all sexual and gender identities, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
