Position Category: Faculty - Tenure Track (FT)

Summary:

The Behavioral Science Department, within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah Valley University, has an outstanding tenure-track opportunity for a teaching-focused individual with expertise in human development and/or family science to become an essential part of our growing faculty in the Fall of 2019. The Family Science faculty is composed of energetic, collaborative academics who actively mentor our 600 undergraduate majors in the context of their scholarly activities. The Family Science program also supports the UVU Stronger Families Project and Marriage and Family Therapy master's degree.

Workload expectations will be comprised of teaching (80%), research (10%), and institutional service (10%). Position requires an assigned teaching load of 24 credit hours during the academic year (approximately 12 credit hours each semestertypically a 4/4 load). Expected to teach, manage, and supervise individuals and groups in a classroom setting via demonstrations, discussion, experiential learning activities, and visual aids as well as provide evaluation of learning through written and performance tests. Continues professional growth as evidenced by research, publication, involvement in professional associations and continuing education. Meets requirements for service to the University, including departmental meetings and committee work. Service responsibilities may include support of the UVU Stronger Families Project and/or Marriage and Family Therapy master's degree.

Must be able to teach using face-to-face, hybrid and online formats.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with an earned doctorate in human development and/or family science, or closely related area, by the position start date. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content.
Candidates must be able to teach two or more of the following courses: Lifespan Development, Early Development, Adult Development, Parenting, Family Dynamics, Family Policy, Research Methods, or Contemporary Families.
Candidates must be able to teach a night or weekend class, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of subject matter and course content.
  • Demonstrate effective instructional pedagogy including teaching strategies and techniques.
  • Possess effective interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage, motivate, and evaluate students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and consistently orally and electronically with students.
  • Possess collegiality and a collaborative approach to working within the department.


Preferred Qualifications:

Although not required, preferred qualifications include an established history of excellence in teaching, experience with hybrid or online course delivery, conducting research with undergraduate students, participating in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and working collaboratively with other faculty both within and across departments. Candidates who do not have these qualifications should demonstrate their potential for obtaining some of these qualifications within their first few years as a pre-tenured faculty member. Candidates who are Certified Family Life Educators (CFLE) or licensed as a marriage and family therapist and are willing and able to support the marriage and family therapy masters degree would also receive preference.

Physical Requirements:

Frequent standing, sitting, and walking; continuous ability to see, hear, and speak; Able to lift up to 10 pounds; frequent fine hand manipulation as associated with the use of a computer.
