The Lab and Communications Assistant will play an integral role in the smooth functioning of the People Lab team, supporting the work of researchers carrying out applied policy research and evaluation. They will play a key role in communicating the work of the Lab, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure to policymakers, researchers, and other key stakeholders.

  • Supports the management of the internal operations of the People Lab, including but not limited to: coordinating team meetings and distributing meeting agendas, tracking project budgets, assisting with overseeing undergraduate research assistants, providing support to research faculty and staff as needed, and working with Berkeley Regional Services to optimize the timely onboarding of students and full-time hires.
  • Under general supervision from the People Lab leadership, summarizes People Lab projects for diverse audiences, including policymakers, researchers, and the public to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the Lab's work.
  • Assists with the writing and submission of Statements of Work for grants and other funding requests; requires liaison with campus Sponsored Projects Office and the Berkeley Regional Services research administration personnel.
  • In conjunction with GSPP's Communication Director and the People Lab leadership, assists with the writing and dissemination of op-eds, blog posts, press releases related to People Lab research.
  • In conjunction with GSPP's Communication Director and the People Lab leadership, supports the design and management of a monthly newsletter to key stakeholders; suggests stories and audience approaches. Requires familiarity with UC Berkeley branding, fonts, colors, and other marketing constraints.
  • In conjunction with GSPP's web developer and Communications Director, the incumbent supports the People Lab website, including topical research, content writing and organizational updates for affiliated staff and academics.
  • Compiles and maintains records of media placements and distributes to interested parties.
  • May require occasional evening or weekend work. May require occasional travel. Other duties as assigned.
  • Sources background information and supports literature reviews related to People Lab work.
  • Supports project management, including tracking progress on key project and funding deadlines and deliverables.

Required Qualifications
  • Ability to take initiative in tracking project deliverables, including strong time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding time frames.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in public affairs, including some combination of strategic communications, government relations, and community relations
  • Thorough skills in understanding and effectively utilizing media mediums including social media and other emerging technologies.
  • Experience with graphical/publishing software, such as Adobe Illustrator or Creative Suite InDesign.

Salary & Benefits

This is an hourly paid (non-exempt) position. Hourly rate is commensurate with experience within the range of $26.53 - $28.73.
