The Economics Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for one full-time, non-tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor to start in the Fall of 2023. Primary responsibilities are to provide high-quality teaching and high-quality service to the Department. This position is renewable annually, potentially leading to an appointment of Associate Teaching Professor following six consecutive years of excellent performance evaluations. Associate Teaching Professors may be promoted to Full Teaching Professors after completing six years of excellent performance as Associate Teaching Professor.

The teaching load will be three courses per semester. Service responsibilities are expected to be equivalent to one course per semester. This is not a research position.

Teaching responsibilities will consist of teaching existing courses at the undergraduate level, including introductory classes (principles of microeconomics, principles of macroeconomics, and statistics 1). The successful candidate is a committed teacher who is able to teach both introductory classes and some elective courses. The department offers a B.A. in Economics and it recently started a B.S. in Quantitative Economics. The department intends to grow its number of majors. The successful candidate will be able to recruit students to the major teaching introductory classes and developing new classes to both attract students and enrich the current offering (here is the current list of courses: https://www.uml.edu/Catalog/Undergraduate/FAHSS/Departments/Economics/Course-listing.aspx

The department seeks to foster the inclusion of traditionally underrepresented groups in the discipline of Economics.

The candidate is expected to contribute a substantial amount of service to the department. Examples of service activities are: advising undergraduate students, enriching activities for current majors (Econ club, Fed Challenge, supervising internships etc.), outreach both within and outside the University (organization of events, outreach to high-schools and community colleges, developing connections with community partners etc.).

The Economics department is part of the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The department currently has 11 full-time faculty. Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • At the time of the application, applicants must already hold a doctoral degree in Economics together with a minimum of three years of experience with college/university-level teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in a full-time position
  • Experience in teaching macroeconomics and/or software classes (e.g. R, Python, Matlab)
  • Ability to teach large sections of introductory classes
  • Ability to work with underrepresented students to promote their inclusion in the Economics discipline
  • Demonstrated interest in implementing new teaching methods in economics
  • Experience teaching in a large public university
