Ngākōreromōtetūranga - About the role

The Head of School will lead a strong academic team to increase student numbers and research income; advance further the quality of teaching and research; develop and foster links with community and other external stakeholders to enhance the impact and influence of our research and the opportunities for our students and staff. As a distinctive and forward-looking institution, our emphasis on bicultural approaches is a strand that runs through our research and education, and the Head of School will be expected proactively to support initiatives in this area.

The appointment will be made at Associate Professor or Professor level in a discipline relevant to the School's research profile, which will be continuing. The Head of School of Social Sciences role will be for a fixed term of three years with the possibility of extension for a further three years by mutual agreement.

The role will be based on our Hamilton campus, with teaching and research also underway in our Tauranga campus, both of which are in located beautiful surroundings.

We are seeking an outstanding and enterprising individual with an international research profile to be the senior strategic and academic leader of the School, responsible for shaping its intellectual, professional and operational culture and direction.

The position is full time and it is expected that approximately half of the time will be assigned to teaching and research activities. To succeed in this role, you will demonstrate a commitment to innovation and excellence in teaching and research. You will have exceptional leadership and communication skills, enjoy strategic engagement, and show evidence of success in an academic leadership role or in leading a cross-disciplinary project or programme at a university.

The School of Social Sciences is part of the Division of Arts, Law, Psychology, and Social Sciences (ALPSS), and the appointee will be an important member of the Division's executive leadership team, reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor. The Division has ambitious plans for nurturing further interdisciplinary and international collaboration and innovation, and increasing our impact and outreach into local, national and international communities.

Current salary range for Associate Professors is NZ$131,040 - $144,690 per annum and for Professors starts at NZ$147,420 per annum. There is also an annual payment for the Head of School role of NZ$20,000.
