Primary Purpose of Position
The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University seeks an energetic and innovative chairperson for the Department of Liberal Studies, who possesses a distinguished record of scholarly and professional accomplishments, appreciates the integration of learning, discovery and engagement, and has significant teaching and administrative experience. The Chair responsibilities are conducted over a 12-month appointment period. Candidates are expected to exhibit a strong commitment to scholarship and excellence in the arena of liberal studies, and to exhibit an open and collegial style of communication. Among the responsibilities of the Chair are the administration of instructional programs, budgetary management, faculty development, instruction, academic advising, and departmental assessment. Teaching as well as Service to the College, University and community are expected. As the academic leader and chief administrative officer of the Department of Liberal Studies, the Chair reports directly to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Liberal Studies has a total of 33 full and part-time faculty and oversees an undergraduate, interdisciplinary degree program with student selected concentration areas. The BA in Liberal Studies has more than 350 enrolled majors.
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences houses the Departments of Criminal Justice, English, History and Political Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Liberal Studies, and Visual and Performing Arts. CAHSS is an academic unit that reports to the Office of the Provost/Division of Academic Affairs and enrolls more than 1,950 students and has more than 130 faculty members.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a discipline appropriate for the Liberal Studies and have an established record of research and scholarship in a specialty area suitable for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Supervisor prefers significant administrative/teaching experience, preferably in a higher-education environment. Candidates also must have a distinguished record of scholarly and professional accomplishments, as well as integration of learning, discovery and engagement. Previous experience in fundraising and extramural funding is a plus.
