Faculty, Tenure Track, Assistant Professor - National Security Studies


Position Category: Faculty - Tenure Track (FT)

Summary:

The UVU Center for National Security Studies is one of the fastest growing programs at the university, with hundreds of students taking classes from a diverse range of expert faculty. Upon graduation, our students typically attend top graduate programs in national security or are offered jobs directly related to the national security field. As a professor in the national security program, you will be expected to help further the mission of the program, which is centered in the core value of public service and the development of our next generation's leaders.

Under direction from the Department Chairperson and the National Security Studies Program Director this individual shall: instruct students enrolled in the National Security Studies Program via in-class, online, and hybrid methods of delivery; administer Student Learning Outcome (SLO) examinations at the beginning and end of each semester; develop and write grant requests related to National Security Studies; accept assignments and serve on department, school and university committees; attend faculty and other meetings as assigned; perform other appropriate university and professional service, support the department's goals and work collaboratively with colleagues in the program, department, school, and across the university.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD/JD/other terminal degree in a security-related field
  • Minimum 2 years working professionally in the US Intelligence Community


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced understanding of the United States national security apparatus and its instruments of national power
  • Knowledge of the United States intelligence community and its role in the US national security decision-making process.
  • Understanding of the intelligence community (including hiring process)
  • Knowledge of the intelligence cycle, intelligence analysis, and other related professional concepts used in the intelligence community.
  • Experience in university-level teaching relating to national security studies
  • Experience in online teaching modality
  • Knowledge of and consistent use of engaged teaching techniques
  • Knowledge of student management, motivation, and evaluation
  • Knowledge of teaching issues, challenges, and completion strategies
  • Knowledge of evaluation of instruction, curriculum development, program development and evaluation
  • Skill in using current technology
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and administrators from


diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to develop courses in National Security/Intelligence and assist in program development


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in political science, international affairs, security studies, advanced technology, or other STEM-related field with applications to national security
  • 5-7 years as an active intelligence officer for the United States
  • 2-3 years teaching experience
  • Evidence of effective and inclusive college-level teaching
  • Desire to help the Center for National Security Studies grow in scope and mission


Physical Requirements:

Must be able to deliver instruction to students for multiple hours at a time
