The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life prepares Tufts students to become active citizens and community leaders. The Institute for Democracy and Higher Education (IDHE), housed at Tisch College, studies and works to strengthen college student political learning, participation, and equity. IDHE's signature initiative, the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) is both a service to higher education institutions providing colleges universities with institution-level data on their students' registration and voting and a national database for research with over 50 million college students. NSLVE currently includes over 1,100 campuses from across the country.



What You'll Do

Under leadership of the director and senior staff, the quantitative researcher will contribute towards the core activities of quantitative research and analyses. The Quantitative Researcher will contribute to the applied research mission of IDHE by building datasets, conducting analyses, and communicating with stakeholders at U.S. colleges and universities about their student voting data and student political learning resources. In this role, they will focus on the needs and requests of NSLVE-participating campuses to support student political learning and civic engagement efforts. Working with the team, they will create data pipelines for scholarly research, contribute to a wide range of quantitative analyses, and be directly involved in the communication and dissemination of data driven insights to various stakeholders within the field of higher education and civic engagement. This is not a software development position, but a research position with a strong programming component. The quantitative researcher reports directly to the director of IDHE.


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Master's degree or higher credential in higher education, public policy, data analytics, statistics, economics, public health, behavioral or social sciences, or a related field, and at least 3 years of work experience.
  • Excellent quantitative skills, including experience in descriptive statistics, data management and visualization, and statistical inference.
  • Experience working with large datasets and programming languages such as R and/or Python.
  • Demonstrated experience with data cleaning, conducting data quality checks and creating accessible documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience with interactive data visualization software like Tableau, R Shiny, etc. preferred. 
  • Some experience with inferential statistics, testing data collection instruments, writing and publishing of research briefs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. preferred
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and experience doing equity research a plus.
  • A broad understanding of higher education's civic mission and/or election administration in the U.S is a plus.
  • Experience with IPEDS and voter files is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to write clear and concise policy and/or technical memos and documents for diverse stakeholder audiences including higher education administrators and policymakers.
  • Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail, flexibility to manage multiple priorities, sometimes simultaneously, under deadlines.
  • Willingness to teach others on the team.
