Departmental Overview
The UC Berkeley Library provides scholarly information to faculty and students in support of the University’s research and teaching mission. Library IT has primary responsibility for supporting and building UC Berkeley Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS), Library website(s) (Drupal), and digital projects. Areas of current work include scalable digital library system architectures; efficient methods for creating digital library content; long-term preservation of digital materials; and standards for digital objects, digitization, and archival collection descriptions. This position is a member of the Library IT ILS Team and works closely with the Cataloging & Metadata Services unit, Acquisitions unit, and Digital Lifecycle Program to provide quality metadata for library resources.

Metadata analysts provide leadership in metadata record acquisition/extraction, analysis, specification writing, transformation, normalization, quality assurance, loading services, and data management. Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate metadata identification.
  • Review and evaluate metadata records.
  • Determine content errors, omissions, and ambiguities that may negatively affect access or aspects of user discovery.
  • Collaborate with Library vendors on issues of metadata availability, delivery, and content.
  • Work closely with multiple library units and stakeholders – notably Library IT and Cataloging & Metadata Services staff — to ensure timely ingest and management of quality metadata across library information databases and systems.
  • Collaborate with library staff to identify and plan metadata service projects, which may include advising units on metadata issues and workflows, participating in workflow analysis and optimization, and identifying and advising on standards and best practices.
  • Engage in post-ingest metadata cleanup projects.
  • Develops training and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with a variety of metadata standards and applications.
  • Basic understanding of the MARC formats and standards for both bibliographic and authority data, including specific fields and their function.
  • Experience with metadata transformation and mapping data from one metadata standard to another, or unformatted data to a specific metadata standard.
  • Experience with OCLC and integrated library systems.
  • Knowledge of data editing tools (such as MarcEdit or Open Refine)
  • Excellent attention to detail for complex, detail-oriented work.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner with technical and non-technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to use or proven ability to learn basic and advanced tools such as XSLT or scripting, to transform or remediate metadata.
  • Ability to participate in multiple concurrent projects in a given timeframe, monitor project workflow, provide regular reports or updates, and meet project deadlines.
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to write technical specifications.
  • Experience working with external vendors.
  • Experience creating and editing MARC bibliographic records for monographs.
  • Experience with library metadata standards and best practices, especially MARC and RDA.
  • Knowledge of advanced tools such as XSLT or scripting, to transform or remediate metadata.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of national cataloging standards and tools, especially: OCLC, Anglo American Cataloging Rules, RDA, Library of Congress classification and subject headings.
  • Reading fluency in one or more Eastern or Western European languages.
  • Knowledge of project management approaches and tools.
  • Experience with automation of manual tasks.
    Salary & Benefits
    The hourly salary range of the position is $26.39 – $40.23, commensurate with experience.
