Departmental Overview

The Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley is home to a diverse group of students and faculty joined by their common interests in understanding and improving the complex world of education.

Our students come here with a wealth of academic talent and professional experience, driven to make an impact as researchers, professional educators, leaders and innovators.

This is a position in the nascent field of Learning Analytics research. The purpose of the position is to assist with analysis of assessment and behavior data from big data sources in education such as massive open online courses (e.g.Berkeley), sensor data collected while students are learning, and historical enrollment data.

Responsibilities
  • Pre-processing of large datasets including data cleaning, annotation, joining
  • Connecting the analyses to real-time source of education data, including campus API systems
  • Developing code which is organized and eventually documented well enough to be shared to a scientific community of peers
  • Assisting in the interpretation of inferential statistics and their connection to formative actions a learner or instructor may wish to take as a result.
  • Quality control of the analysis and deployment codebase so that the developed system can operate under higher than average demand conditions
  • Assisting in the survey of related scholarly work for the project
  • Co-authoring a scholarly article that summarizes the work and its outcomes
  • Keeping in regularly scheduled communication with the PI and other individuals contributing to the project


Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the programming langues of python and javascript
  • Working knowledge of the web frameworks of node.js and sails
  • Working knowledge of backend databases such as mongo
  • Experience with writing peer-reviewed academic articles
  • Working knowledge of neural networks applied using Python's Keras library
  • Pursuing or completed bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training


Salary & Benefits

This is an hourly paid (non-exempt) position. Rate will be commensurate with experience.
