The Berkeley People Lab aims to transform the public sector by producing cutting-edge research on the people in government and the communities they serve. Using insights from behavioral science and evidence from public management, we design and evaluate initiatives that can solve urgent public sector challenges. Projects range from: how to recruit and retain a diverse workforce, how to reduce burnout in front line workers, how to increase take-up of social programs, how to increase trust in government and how to improve government programs for vulnerable populations. The vast majority of studies involve a survey experiment or a randomized controlled trial (RCT), and direct collaboration with government agencies and other stakeholders.
This position involves working with a diverse team of scholars, led by Professors Elizabeth Linos and Amy Lerman, who are passionate about conducting applied, data-driven research on key priorities of government. The selected candidate will serve as the Innovation Team Lead for a new initiative, that seeks to engage and inspire residents and stakeholders within California. In particular, the Innovation Team Lead will oversee the implementation and evaluation of up to 6 large-scale innovation projects across the State, in collaboration with multiple government departments and academic partners. We expect that most evaluations will involve a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The Innovation Team Lead will be a senior member of the team and will be responsible for managing partner relationships, ensuring high quality research designs, and representing the Lab publicly. They will also play an integral role in creating protocols and reviewing research and coding for junior staff.
- Ensures smooth implementation and evaluation of 6 large-scale innovation projects (in collaboration with research and practitioner teams)
- Participates in grant writing, fundraising, program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of Lab.
- Reviews evaluation design and data analysis of junior research team members.
- Supports overall Lab functioning and research on a case-by-case basis as needed.
- May require occasional evening and/or weekend work. Occasional travel may be required. Other duties as needed and as assigned.
- Works with Lab leadership and communications team to share updates on projects with policymakers, funders, and research community.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Academic background and experience in conducting randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
- Ability to review quantitative data analytics and trouble-shoot solutions with junior staff.
- Solid fundraising experience.
- PhD in public policy, economics, political science or related field.
Salary & Benefits
This is a monthly paid (exempt) position. Salary range: $75,400.00 - $98,000.00
