A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Morganti Lab at the University of Kentucky, Lexington KY. The initial focus of the postdoctoral scientist will be an exciting NIH-funded project examining how astrocytes regulate the neuroinflammatory response to cerebrovascular dysfunction (VCID) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We have long-term funding and immediate openings related to the following projects: 1.) What are astrocytes’ disease-induced heterogeneity or susceptibility in response to comorbid VCID/AD-like pathology? 2.) How does altering astrocytes’ access to key inflammatory transcription factors affect pathophysiological progression of VCID/AD? 3.) What are the functional consequences of comorbid degenerative pathology upon critical neuron-astrocyte architectures? Anticipated approaches to delineate these comorbid pathophysiological responses will harness multiple contemporary technologies including single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, flow cytometry/FACS, metabolomics, and multiphoton vascular imaging in intact animals.

Although the project is currently funded by NIH, an integral part of postdoctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application, so postdocs are encouraged to apply for external funding when possible. Postdocs will also be eligible for applying to our Sanders-Brown Center on Aging T32 training program, which focuses on diseases of the aging brain.
The Center on Aging also includes the NIH-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Center that provides access to world-class translational resources to support innovative research (e.g. longitudinally followed and well-characterized clinical cohorts, neuroimaging, biomarkers, autopsy specimens). Postdocs can also collaborate with a number of other centers at the university that facilitate neuroscience research, including the Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Center, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute, to name a few.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills, a solid publication record, and appropriate experience. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in mouse models of stroke, TBI, and/or AD, as well as experience with single-cell RNAseq, flow cytometry/FACS. A combination of microscopy, genetics, and biochemistry experience would also be very advantageous.
