The Faculty of Social Work of the University of Manitoba invites applications for a two-year term position at the rank of Instructor I, II, or Senior Instructor in the Master of Social Work based in Indigenous Knowledges Program. The instructor role includes teaching the equivalent of 18 credit hours, graduate student supervision, and service. The anticipated start date for this position is August 18, 2022. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Candidates will hold a masters-level degree in Social Work or a related field. A Ph.D. in Social Work or a related field is considered an asset. The ideal candidate will be able to work in partnership with Elders, work collaboratively as a team member, have a commitment to and/or demonstrated record of working collaboratively with Indigenous peoples and communities, and foster and enhance connections with Indigenous organizations. The ideal candidate will be a creative and energetic individual with a demonstrated interest in advancing indigenist social work, guiding graduate students in the development and implementation of their community-based projects or theses, and contributing to the strengthening of Indigenous communities.
Knowledge and professional experience directly relevant to this position are: Indigenous ways of being; Indigenous-based social work programming and practices; social policy related to Indigenous peoples; critical theories, particularly those focused on colonialism, anti-colonialism and indigenism; and Indigenous-focused research. Individuals should know relevant Indigenous protocols. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and experience in direct service and healing methods with Indigenous individuals, families and communities.
The Faculty of Social Work is one of the largest social work programs in Canada, with a proud history of teaching, research and service spanning over 75 years. The Faculty offers the Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees in social work, including the established innovative MSW-IK program. Our faculty is actively engaged in research and academic publication on a wide variety of topics, and the University of Manitoba is part of the U15 group of research-intensive Canadian universities. The Master of Social Work based in Indigenous Knowledges (MSW-IK) is an innovative program that has been developed with strong and continuous input by members of the Indigenous communities in Manitoba. It is overseen by an Advisory Committee consisting of Elders from various locations in Manitoba and consists of 13 courses that are co-taught by Elders and academics with curriculum based in Indigenous knowledges and critical theories. Students choose to complete either a thesis or major project as part of their program. The first intake of students began the program in September 2016. The MSW-IK program is delivered at the University of Manitoba's William Norrie Centre (WNC) located at 485 Selkirk Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
