The Behavioral Science Department at Utah Valley University has a tenure-track opportunity for a teaching-focused individual with expertise in developmental psychology to become an essential part of our growing faculty in the Fall of 2020 as an Assistant Professor. The psychology faculty is composed of energetic, collaborative academics who actively mentor nearly 1,500 undergraduate majors in the context of their scholarly activities. Our internationally recognized faculty is supported in their instructional activities by the Office of Teaching and Learning, an outstanding center for faculty development that has robust staff support for online/hybrid courses and possesses a well-equipped technology lab. Workload expectations will be comprised of teaching (80%), research (10%), and service (10%).

The Department of Behavioral Sciences currently consists of close to 40 full-time faculty members and numerous adjunct faculty members from the community. Almost 1,500 students currently major in either Psychology or Behavioral Science with an emphasis in Psychology. Our approach to professional education is student-centered and demands a high level of faculty-student engagement. The department is involved in the community, which provides rich resources for student education, continued faculty development, and service to the community. No single theoretical orientation predominates in the department, and a diversity of philosophical positions are welcomed in both the department and within the psychology program. The department and institution also support work-life balance; the last three psychologists who have earned tenure have done so while welcoming children into their families.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Psychology with extensive training in human development from a regionally accredited institution ABD considered, with the expectation that the candidate will have their degree completed by the hire date. Evidence of effective and inclusive college-level teaching; potential for scholarly/creative work with undergraduate students consistent with a teaching university.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to teach one or more of the following courses: Human Lifespan Development, Infancy and Childhood Development, Adolescent Development, Adult Development, or Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences;
Ability teach psychology as a science;
Able and willing to teach in face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities;
Knowledge of and consistent use of engaged teaching techniques;
Ability to teach a night or weekend class, as needed;
Skilled in effective oral and written communication that appropriately targets the intended audience (e.g., students, colleagues); and
Knowledge of and openness to multiple scientific viewpoints and respectful to those who do not hold the same theoretical orientation(s).
Ability to effectively mentor students in undergraduate research, independent studies, and/or capstone projects;
Ability to incorporate new scholarship into their teaching;
Has at least one peer-reviewed journal publication.
Engages in open science practices.
Ability to teach at least one of the following classes: Cognitive Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Introduction to Brain and Behavior, Research Methods and Statistics.
Understands and employs cognitive science to support adult learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include that the candidate
Training in lifespan development;
Equipped to teach students of widely varying ability levels with diverse educational backgrounds and academic/professional trajectories;
Previously taught at least two semesters at the college level, preferably with at least two classes per term;
Experience developing online courses

Physical Requirements:

Frequent standing, sitting, and walking; continuous ability to see, hear, and speak; Able to lift up to 10 pounds; frequent fine hand manipulation as associated with the use of a computer.
