The School of Social Work at Simmons University seeks an adjunct instructor to teach a two-semester doctoral level statistics course in the Summer 2019 and Fall 2019 semester. The Summer 2019 term course dates are May 23 - July 25, 2019. Fall 2019 term course dates are September 5 - December 12, 2019.
The courses are weekly; held for 4-hour sessions in the Summer and 3-hour sessions in the Fall; and scheduled to run on Thursdays on campus. Each course will have approximately 8-10 students. Courses are typically taught as a combination of lecture and active classroom learning with hands-on data analysis exercises in class using SPSS and/or STATA.
Course Titles and Descriptions
SW 651: Introduction to Statistics
This course examines fundamental statistics and data analysis techniques appropriate for social work research. Emphasis is on the application of elementary statistical techniques to the research examination process; the steps needed in the process of data analysis; how computers can be used; and in what areas conclusions can be drawn.
SW 652: Introduction to Multivariate Statistics
This course builds on material presented in prior research and statistics courses in the doctoral program, offering students opportunities to acquire more advanced data analysis skills. Two multivariate analysis techniques are emphasized, analysis of variance and multiple regression. With both analytic techniques, the interpretation of findings and the development of conclusions in the areas of practice, policy, and further research are stressed.
Instructions for Applicants:
- Candidates should have a Ph.D., preferably in the social sciences
- Have prior graduate-level teaching experience
- A record of research that includes higher order quantitative analysis demonstrated through peer-reviewed publication within the past 3 years
- Fluency in SPSS, STATA or both
- Strong communication skills
