(Regional Healthy Home Educator)
(This is a part time (75% effort) grant-funded, non-tenure track position. Funding must be available for continuation of appointment)
WORK LOCATION: Central Region, LSU AgCenter. The specific target parishes are to be determined by LDH based upon areas of highest need.
NATURE OF WORK: The Lead-safe, Healthy Home Education project is an educational outreach program of the LSU AgCenter Extension Service, through its LaHouse Resource Center in partnership with the Louisiana Dept. of Health (LDH), Office of Public Health (OPH), Louisiana Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and Healthy Homes Program (LHHCLPPP). The ultimate goal for this collaborative program is to protect the health of Louisiana families and reduce childhood lead poisoning through lead-safe and healthy homes education. The objectives are:
• to increase the number of young children screened for elevated lead in Louisiana;
• to increase awareness and adoption of lead-safe and healthy home practices;
• to strengthen collaborations and actions to reduce lead exposure, lead poisoning, asthma and other home-based health hazards among Louisiana children.
The primary target audience is parents of young children, with special emphasis on vulnerable populations including families in poverty, Native American tribes and refugees. Secondary target audiences are pediatric health professionals (particularly WIC, Immunization Program, Maternal and Child Health and Medicaid providers), community health workers, childcare providers and other stakeholders and organizations that serve these audiences and share this project goal.
The Extension Healthy Home Educators will work with the LSU AgCenter LaHouse Resource Center faculty and LHHCLPPP to design and implement educational programs and community engagement within their area of the state to: (a) expand lead screening and prevention actions to help reduce lead poisoning rates, and (b) foster healthy home environments.
1.Communication and collaboration:
Work with Extension program specialists and LDH LHHCLPPP leadership on an ongoing basis to achieve program objectives.
Facilitate educational program development communications and collaborations through networking and participation in Louisiana Healthy Homes Coalition meetings. Build and maintain relationships with local Office of Public Health staff from programs such as WIC, Immunization, Maternal & Child Health, and Medicaid program. Work with LHHCLPPP to facilitate community mobilization “Chat and Chew” workshops on lead poisoning prevention in the assigned region.
2. Engagement and training of professionals and volunteers:
Inform (via meetings, materials, direct contacts, etc.) and conduct training activities to educate and engage healthcare providers, community health workers and volunteers, childcare providers and other project partners - to expand awareness and encourage them to educate their clients about lead hazards, lead-safe practices, environmental asthma trigger control strategies, and other healthy home topics that address their needs. Conduct community canvassing in target region to promote lead poisoning prevention messages and lead screening among private and public pediatric and childcare professionals, volunteers, and community organizations. Distribute relevant information resources, including the LDH Louisiana Healthy Homes and Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Healthcare Provider and Parent Toolkit, lead awareness flyers, order forms and other materials provided by program leaders to: pediatrician offices; Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs); Rural Health Clinics; WIC, Immunization Program, MCH Program and Medicaid program offices; day care centers and community-based organizations.
Plan and implement an educational outreach program to increase awareness and motivate parents to adopt lead-safe and healthy home practices and to have young children screened for lead. Ensure that event details including communications, venue confirmation, materials distribution and technology are arranged and set-up in an appropriate and timely manner. Use Extension-developed and other approved curricula, publications and displays to deliver presentations, workshops and exhibits for parents and general audience groups. Pursue opportunities to participate in community events and work with collaborators to initiate or coordinate educational activities at a variety of venues that reach target audiences, including WIC clinics, Immunization/MCH/Medicaid events, Head Start centers, community health fairs, tribal and refugee community events, libraries and other partnering agencies’ events in the region.
Provide Extension consumer education materials to direct contact audiences. Distribute LDH LHHCLPPP lead fact sheets to healthcare and childcare centers to expand reach and awareness among vulnerable populations. Help promote and facilitate the Louisiana Lead Poisoning Prevention campaign and LDH LHHCLPP educational outreach events, including National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week awareness activities.
4.Reporting, Evaluation and Performance Measures:
Track and report project tasks in quarterly reports and on the LSU AgCenter’s Dynamics reporting system, including: meetings, canvassing activities, educational events, registration lists, audience types and numbers. Collect and report audience registration lists and evaluations for workshops, training activities and other appropriate activities. Summarize and report Chat and Chew community meeting and Coalition meeting outcomes.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in nursing, public health, social work, education, family and consumer science, communications or a related field. Successful experience in teaching, training, communications, community engagement or similar professional roles. Expertise, education or keen interest in educational outreach and health. Competencies: (skills, knowledge, and abilities.) should include Strong communication, teaching, program coordination, organization and outreach abilities, Basic computer competency, Proactive problem-solving ability, initiative, ability to work independently and as part of team, Flexibility, adaptability, and professionalism. A personal vehicle, valid Louisiana driver’s license and auto insurance are required.
