Overview

The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life prepares Tufts students to become active citizens and community leaders. As the only university-wide college of its kind, its mission is to engage Tufts students in meaningful community building, public service experiences, and transformational learning.  It conducts groundbreaking research on young people’s civic and political participation and forges innovative community partnerships. Tisch College is a national leader in civic education, whose model and research are setting the standard for higher education’s role in civic engagement.

The Institute for Democracy and Higher Education (IDHE) is an applied research center and think tank that studies and works to improve college student political learning for and institutional engagement in democracy. Including student voting, campus environments for political learning, closing equity gaps in participation, political discourse, and higher education’s role in a more inclusive, equitable, and just democracy.  IDHE's signature initiative, the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) (“n-solve”) is both a service to higher education institutions and a national database for research with over 50 million college students. NSLVE currently serves around 1,200 colleges and universities nationwide.

Because of IDHE’s explicit focus on educating for a more inclusive, equitable, and just democracy, and because of Tisch College’s foundational commitment to diversity and inclusion, candidates with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences are especially encouraged to apply.
