Open Rank: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (Tenure-Track)

The Institute of Gerontology (IOG; www.iog.wayne.edu) at Wayne State University (WSU) invites applications for an approved open rank position in the area of Aging and Urban Health.

All candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline. Applicants at the Assistant Professor rank should have at least two years of postdoctoral experience, and a record indicative of outstanding research achievement to come. Applicants at the Associate and Full Professor rank should have a record of accomplishment in obtaining external funding and a coherent research program. The position will be a joint appointment in the Institute of Gerontology (75%) and the academic department most suitable (25%). The candidate is expected to demonstrate commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring of graduate students in research. Associate and Full Professors interested in leadership within the Institute of Gerontology are especially encouraged to apply.

We seek applicants with research interests in aging and urban health. IOG faculty and outreach staff are closely involved with three NIH P30 Centers in which community outreach and engagement is a central component. These include the Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research (one of the original 5 NIA Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research); the Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (an NIEHS P30 Center) and the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (a three university NIA P30 Center). The IOG is known nationally for its extensive outreach and engagement with older persons in Detroit and the surrounding area, and the professionals who work with them. The IOG is intimately involved in the new Health Equity Research Institute at Wayne State.

Qualifications for the Position

  • Doctoral degree and faculty appointment in an aging and health field such as behavioral or social sciences, nursing, epidemiology, social work, health sciences etc.
  • Record of quality research, including external funding, in aging and urban health issues

Job duties will consist of:

  • Conducting a program of research in aging and urban health/mental health
  • Publishing 3-4 peer review articles each year
  • Seeking and obtaining funding to conduct research
  • Teaching 1 course per year in the appropriate department
  • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, including advising Ph.D. candidates
  • Participating in the Institute of Gerontology pre-doctoral training program as a mentor
  • Providing service within the Institute and department, as well as locally and nationally
  • Candidates at the Associate or Full Professor rank with have the opportunity to hold a leadership position within the Institute
