Division Academic Affairs, Diversity and Equity
The Division of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ADEI) leads the charge in establishing an equity-minded community through its educational programs, resources, partnerships, and collaborative engagement with offices, colleges, and departments throughout campus. Specifically, ADEI oversees each of NIU’s diversity and cultural resource centers- the Asian American Resource Center, Center for Black Studies, Latino Resource Center and Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, the Office of Undocumented Student Support, offer places of community, support, connection, celebration and conversation. Amongst its vast offerings, ADEI also provides meaningful trainings, social justice education opportunities and resources for faculty, staff, students and the community the Office of Prevention Education and Outreach and Social Justice Education ADEI has many partners across campus which include but are not limited to the academic diversity centers, the Disability Resource Center and Military and Veteran Services, which also offer provide similar support and connection.
The Director will be a visionary and strategic leader who will provide oversight for a comprehensive social justice education program within the division of ADEI. The Director for Social Justice Education is responsible for developing collaborative programs focused on cultural competency, racial healing and reconciliation, counternarratives, community building, restorative justice, equity, and inclusion responsive to the ongoing needs of all constituents at NIU. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ADEI), the Director of Social Justice Education will develop and implement university-wide programs in alignment with the three Strategic Priorities within Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI), the annual University Goals, and the Strategic Enrollment Management Plan in alignment with, Northern Illinois University (NIU) mission vision and values. With vision and expertise, the Director, in conjunction with the social justice team will advance signature social justice programs (i.e., CODE Programs, Huskie Conversation Café Podcasts, CODE Peer-to-Peer Program, Social Justice Town Halls as well as the new Faculty Academy for Cultural Competence and Equity (FACCE) Institute and Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center. The director will supervisor a dedicated team of professionals and university-wide volunteers committed to implementing and assessing all SJE initiatives and programs. The Director will have fiduciary responsibilities for the Social Justice Education operations and programs and personnel. The Director will work with the Assistant Vice President of ADEI and the ADEI team and key campus constituents to strategically address the campus climate needs and proactively create innovative data informed programs that assist in transforming the NIU campus community.
In additional to program leadership, the Director will work collaboratively with all divisions and community partners to synthesize and develop education and awareness programs and professional development initiatives, tools, and resources to address climate. The Director will play a major role in advancing programs and resource that contribute to university-wide culture shifts and will engage and educate staff, students, faculty, and administrators with the goal of creating a more socially just and inclusive NIU community.
The Director must be diplomatic, strategic, organized, creative, visionary, ethical, committed to social justice, equity, and fundamentally an educator driven to deliver results focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and organizational transformation
Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
The Director will serve as the primary administrator for the NIU Social Justice Education collaborative and the Faculty Academy for Cultural Competence and Equity (NIU FACCE) Institute. The Director will provide oversight and coordination with campus partners and the university community to develop and implement a comprehensive social justice education program with ADEI. This individual is expected to ensure there is extensive collaboration with community and campus partners who provide education, services, support and resources to faculty, staff, student and the university community.
Duties include working with the Assistant Vice President of ADEI to strategically assess the campus climate to proactively create data informed interventions, shift campus culture, and direct educational development initiatives that are in alignment with the university’s diversity values. The Director is responsible for the growth, recruitment, training, on-going professional development and administration of the faculty, staff and student Conversations on Diversity and Equity (CODE) facilitators. Additionally, the director is responsible for the development of programs and divisional initiatives, fiscal management and the creation of publications addressing diversity and equity issues. The Director must be diplomatic, strategic, organized, creative, visionary, inclusive, equitable and fundamentally a facilitator and educator driven to deliver results focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and organizational change.
- Provide oversight, leadership, coordination, supervision and professional development education for the CODE Facilitator Train-the-Trainer Institute and campus CODE directives that include the development of curriculum, content knowledge, training materials, workshop facilitation, facilitator supervision and program evaluation.
- Oversee the Faculty Academy for Cultural Competence and Equity (NIUFACCE) Institute which includes oversight of a faculty advisory team providing consultation, education, curriculum development, pedagogical best practices, program assessment, and strategies for data collection for NIU. The director will also be responsible for creating and directing a summer institute for faculty development to produce action-oriented inclusive classroom practices.
- Provide leadership for the People Organizing Weekend Empowerment Retreat (POWER) by working with an advisory committee of faculty and staff to develop, supervise, evaluate, provide budget oversight and on-going engagement of student advocacy initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with campus partners to inform and provide educational support for the onboarding processes for faculty and staff.
- Develop and execute short- and long-term strategic plans for the Social Justice Education collaborative, including grant research and proposal submission, to provide support for equity and cultural competency education throughout the campus.
- Develop organizational capacity and effectiveness across the institution for on-going social justice and inclusion efforts.
- Identify and recommend technological tools to provide diversity, equity and inclusion educational opportunities for faculty, staff and students.
- Cultivate, direct and promote inclusive work and learning environments through organizational wide education, professional speakers, webinars for faculty, staff, and students in alignment with institutional values and ADEI Strategic Priorities.
- Work with faculty and the bias report staff to identify barriers for academic equity and implement intentional equity, diversity and inclusion strategies to diversify pedagogical approaches in the classroom and reduce incidents of exclusionary classroom experiences.
- Apply restorative justice practices such as peace circles, racial healing facilitation, and meditation to promote holistic diversity education in collaboration with Student Affairs and Student Conduct for student education.
- Consult with offices and departments to address barriers to student success and recommend strategies and programming initiatives to create a more inclusive environment.
- Expand and strengthen partnerships within the NIU and external institutions to support diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and professional development opportunities for staff and faculty to improve trainer’s cultural competency, enhance student success and reduce equity gaps.
- Manage the budget for the Social Justice Education collaborative and assist in developing strategies to provide external funding through diversity and inclusion initiatives.
- Research, identify and distribute resources through the development of an online faculty toolkit and resource library for campus wide distribution.
- Oversee and contribute to the creation of a journal of publications to highlight faculty scholarship and research focused on culturally competent classroom practices.
- Collaborate with the First-and Second Year Experience office to develop curriculum and train UNIV instructors to increase cultural competencies of first year and transfer undergraduate students.
- Direct an educational multi-module program to increase the collaborative engagement and cultural competencies for 300+ student organizations to enhance their leadership development to create an inclusive campus climate.
- Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of an assistant director, office support staff member, a post-doctorate, graduate research assistants and undergraduate student positions.
Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
A Master’s Degree in any field.
Three (3) years of demonstrated experience developing, leading, or managing, programs. that advance social justice and or diversity, equity and/or inclusion initiatives/programs.
Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating professional development programs, trainings and/or workshops.
Two (2) years of personnel supervision, volunteer management, and/or leading teams.
Demonstrated experience developing and managing program budget.
Ability to act as a diplomatic, equitable and ethical professional.

Education and Experience Preferred
A doctorate degree in any field.
Five (5) years of demonstrated experience working within higher education delivering results focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and organizational transformation.
Demonstrated experience with program assessment, and evaluation.
High proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Demonstrated experience working with faculty and academic leaders.
Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, program development, and organizational transformation.
Demonstrated experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
