Position Summary

The Metrics and Assessment Librarian reports to the Managing Librarian for Resource Management and is responsible for generating, collecting, organizing, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data in support of the strategic collection development of Falvey Memorial Library. The incumbent leads the Library's assessment effort in various library projects, initiatives, and activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Usage statistics. Coordinates electronic resource data collection from proprietary vendor data, internal systems, and third-party tools like 360 Counter and Google Analytics and compiles usage reports for electronic resources.
  • Reporting and visualization. Applies usage statistics and other assessment data to identify trends and use of collection and to support evaluation of renewals, alternative access options, withdrawal, and related policy decisions. Establishes and curates reporting for electronic resources, collections, and library in support of Falvey Memorial Library projects. Establishes data and visualization reporting model for reference and usage by library staff. Supports materials budget analysis and planning.
  • Collection assessment. Establishes and documents best practices for collection assessment. Collaborates with other Collections and Stewardship staff, Research Services & Scholarly Engagement Department, and Collection Management Committee on strategic collection development projects.
  • Library assessment. Develops, coordinates, and contributes to library-wide assessment including responses to national surveys including ACRL, IPEDS and Middle States. Provides expertise and guidance to library departmental assessment activities. Serves as liaison to Office of Planning and Institutional Research.
  • Leads and contributes to programs, goals and strategic initiatives of the Collections and Scholarship area, Falvey Memorial Library, Villanova University, and professional organizations, as appropriate.
  • Performs additional duties and assists with special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution, or other advanced degree in a relevant discipline, required.
  • 1+ years data analysis and reporting experience, preferably in an academic library
  • Knowledge of collection development and management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of COUNTER and SUSHI data collection standards.
  • Knowledge of bibliographic control procedures and standards, including familiarity with Library of Congress classification system.
  • Knowledge of assessment methodologies and data analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of visualization tools and other means of effectively communicating evidence from data.
  • Awareness of trends in proprietary and open access digital information platforms.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills with the ability to present information and ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to handle high volume of activity with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborative approach to problem solving and working across organizational boundaries in service of user needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, exercise flexibility in meeting objectives, effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adjust as circumstances change.
  • Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for developing and maintaining relationships with diverse user communities.
  • Meets organizational competencies identified by the library.
  • Computer proficiency with software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office), integrated library systems, different collection assessment/data collection tools, and visualization software.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of resource management utilities, and automated library software, preferred.


Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

  • Prolonged sitting, standing and walking for up to 4 hours at a time, frequent bending and lifting, able to lift up to 30 lbs. of library materials while moving/walking, pushing and pulling a book truck (4 wheels) of library materials weighing between 50 and 100 lbs., ability to climb several flights of stairs on an occasional basis.
