The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) (https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/) Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program (https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/college/diversity-equity-belonging/distinguished-visiting-scholars.html) at the University at Buffalo currently seeks applications from exceptionally accomplished individuals who can substantially advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through a merging of their scholarship and/or creative endeavors, teaching, mentoring, and service with their skills, experience, assessment of their historically marginalized identity, and areas of expertise. Our hope is for each Scholar to produce and share work and immerse themselves into the campus community in a way that is consistent with the values of shared responsibility, community, accountability, and action pursued by the Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Team (https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/college/diversity-equity-belonging.html).

Distinguished Visiting Scholars will contribute to the university’s existing commitments to diversify its professoriate and campus experiences through groundbreaking research, transformative educational experiences, and deeply engaged service to its communities by exposing students, faculty, and staff to new ideas and perspectives, engaging with undergraduate and graduate students through mentoring circles, and connecting the community through talks, exhibits, scholarship, and creative projects.

Program Structure: The Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program offers a ten-month, temporary, full-time, residential, benefits-eligible, salaried position hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences and any one of the departments of the scholar’s expertise that CAS houses at the University at Buffalo. The program will host a new cohort of Scholars on an annual basis.

Eligibility/Rank: The position is open to advanced assistant professors, associate or full professors, or highly accomplished non-academic creatives whose profile matches the needs of the program and would be qualified to obtain tenure in an academic department in CAS at UB. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. No sponsorship is available for this position.

Mentoring: The evaluation of each applicant includes careful attention to the applicant’s history of mentoring students and record of developing and cultivating a new generation of scholars, artists and/or practitioners in their field. Applicants must include contact information for letters of reference from prior and/or current mentees. They must also include a description that outlines their history of mentoring, including their approach to engaging with students and how their outcomes have advanced diversity, equity, and inclusion in a scholarly, professional, and personal context.

The Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program is committed to making the visiting appointment a residential experience. Each Scholar must reside in the Buffalo/Niagara region during their fellowship term, affording them the ability to be on campus during mid-day and at other designated times three to four days a week. Scholars are also required to attend the weekly seminars and other speaker events hosted by the Center and/or their host departments. Scholars are expected to reside in the area from the week of August 19, 2024, through May 23, 2025, excluding holiday periods.

The Director, along with CAS staff, can provide information about finding housing and schools in the region. Relocation funds are available to all Scholars who move in order to participate in the program.

Salary: $115,000 (non-negotiable)
