Director of PhD Program – The Fletcher School – (20001615)
This is a part-time position working 17.5 hours per week.
The PhD Director works to ensure highest quality of the Fletcher PhD Program of about 50 students in all aspects: directing the admission of superb students; delivery of a first-rate educational product and excellent support services to insure that doctoral students productive in their research and move through the program in a timely fashion, all in coordination with the PhD Committee and PhD Academic Director. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, as is experience in data management and information systems.
The PhD Director plans, organizes, and administers a comprehensive set of academic and administrative services to a diverse group of doctoral candidates – individuals who will take up positions in a variety of different career fields, from teaching and research, industry, government to international organizations, consulting, non-profits. The PhD Director is expected to maintain high levels of student satisfaction with the PhD program and maintain and enhance the PhD community and esprit de corps. As PhD Director, he or she is expected to offer outreach and professional workshops in which all seats are full and evaluations are positive. The PhD Director is the first point of contact for PhD students at the school. He or she needs to be kind, but firm in ensuring that individual students make steady progress in their courses of study while in the PhD program, insuring they meet all requirements in a timely fashion and communicating those requirements to each student in a systematic way. The expectation is that the PhD Director knows each student extremely well and meets with each student on a regular basis so as to help students succeed professionally and personally. The PhD Director works closely with the PhD committee to develop procedures, degree requirements, and deadlines, and with the PhD Academic Director, to provide every PhD student the best possible educational experience while at the Fletcher School.
MA with 10+ years of experience in dealing with faculty, graduate students, and all levels of administrators. PhD preferred.
Expertise in a wide variety of areas ranging from conducting research, program and curriculum planning, and assessing applicants for admission from both the US and other countries (ability to interpret and critically assess GRE/TOEFL scores, both US and foreign transcripts, doctoral research proposals, letters of recommendation) to dealing with student issues (both professional and personal, directing them to appropriate services when needed), dissemination of information on programs/fellowships/grants, database and website management, managing advertising schedules, and production of informational brochures/websites. Facility in one or more foreign languages and experience with foreign cultures is very helpful for both dealing with students/prospective students and for reading international student applications.
