About MRU

Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. About the Faculty of Arts

The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts at Mount Royal University invites applications for a full-time position in Psychology with a specialization in development, which will commence July 1, 2022, subject to budgetary approval, at the Rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  

The Faculty of Arts houses the following departments: Economics, Justice & Policy Studies; English, Languages & Cultures; Humanities; Interior Design; Psychology; and Sociology & Anthropology. The Faculty of Arts houses more than 2,000 students seeking degrees in Anthropology, Criminal Justice, English, History, Interior Design, Policy Studies, Psychology, and Sociology, and offers over 30,000 seats in Arts courses each year. In addition, the Faculty of Arts offers 26 minors over a diverse range of disciplines and teaches a large majority of courses associated with the General Education degree. Arts faculty have received national and international recognition for their teaching and research, hold Tri-Council grants, publish books, and disseminate research in top-ranked academic journals.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Psychology. The Department of Psychology currently offers a degree program in Psychology, with majors in Psychology and Psychology Honours, as well as a minor in Psychology.

About the Role

Mount Royal University (MRU) is accepting applications for a full-time position in Psychology with a preferred specialization in developmental psychology, to commence July 1, 2022, subject to budgetary approval. Backgrounds in social/personality psychology or clinical/counselling will also be considered.

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/scholarship/service pattern (TSS) focuses on teaching (3 courses per term) with the requirement that the faculty member establishes and maintains a research program and is involved in service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service only, with instructors teaching 4 courses per term, but without the requirement of an established research program. The successful candidate for this position will be hired into either the teaching/scholarship/service pattern (TSS) or the teaching service pattern (TS), depending on applicant preference and/or committee decision. There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.

The successful candidate will join the Department of Psychology at the level of Assistant Professor. Regardless of teaching stream, the successful candidate will teach and mentor undergraduate students. Candidates on the TSS stream will be expected to have an established research agenda in keeping with a teaching-focused undergraduate university. Research and service opportunities may include supervision of research assistants or Honours students. MRU’s Research Office provides support for research and for applications for Tri-Council and other funding opportunities. The Department of Psychology also has a cutting-edge research space, the Centre for Psychological Innovation, where faculty carry out research and scholarship and provide students with hands-on experience and the opportunity to engage in innovative research.

Qualifications

Candidates are expected to hold a completed Ph.D. in Psychology or be near completion, with a preferred background in development, though applicants with backgrounds in either or both social/personality psychology and/or clinical/counselling may also be considered. An incomplete PhD must be completed by the date of appointment (July 1, 2022).

Teaching experience at the post-secondary level is required. The successful applicant must be qualified to teach introductory and senior courses in Psychology. The successful candidate will also be involved in both course and program development.

Though not expected, candidates will be encouraged to teach courses in General Education, Cluster-Two: Values, Beliefs & Identity. The Department of General Education is responsible for the development and delivery of the liberal education component of all Mount Royal University undergraduate degree programs and offers required foundational first-year courses and a wide variety of upper-level courses.
