Associate or Assistant Professor in Social Work
The Social Work Department at Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Work at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor to begin September 2023. Skidmore seeks to attract an academically and culturally diverse faculty, especially those who can contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the community through their teaching, scholarship, and service. Enthusiasm for advising, teaching, and mentoring a diverse population of students is essential.
Candidates must have an MSW and two years post-MSW practice experience, a PhD in social work/social welfare or related discipline, prior experience teaching at the college-level, an active scholarly/research program, and leadership interest and capacity. The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to undergraduate education, familiarity with CSWE standards, and demonstrated teaching excellence through evidence such as teaching evaluations. The department encourages applications from experienced faculty motivated to teach in a small BSW program within the context of a vibrant, selective liberal arts college. The area of expertise is open but the program is especially interested in candidates who are able to teach across our CSWE-accredited program (e.g., research, HBSE, micro and macro practice, and social policy) as well as courses in their area of expertise. The course load is 18 credits (typically four to five courses per year), with the Department Chair receiving a 25% reduction in teaching for administrative duties. Within the context of the regular teaching load, the position also occasionally includes teaching a first-year interdisciplinary seminar (topic open) and supervising students doing community service and independent research. Candidates with a demonstrated interest in academic leadership are strongly preferred.
Requirements:
Candidates for the position must provide a cover letter describing teaching philosophy. This should explain how the candidate will contribute to institutional diversity and excellence and express the profession’s concern for social justice; it should also address plans for future research. Teaching evaluations, the names and contact information of three references, and a curriculum vitae are also required.
Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Priority will be given to applicants who apply before September 30, 2022.
