The Department of Art Therapy and Counseling at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position, beginning in August of 2024. Salary is competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.
SAIC’s Department of Art Therapy and Counseling offers a three-year, 60-credit, Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling (MAATC) degree with an enrollment of 50 graduate students. The program currently has 3 full-time faculty and 24 part-time faculty, offering undergraduate and graduate courses each year, including extensive supervised fieldwork experiences at the graduate level.
The MAATC program focuses on providing an art therapy and counseling education that prepares artist-art therapists to practice in specialized settings within a socio-cultural context. The program was established in 1981 and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Since 1989 it has been approved by the American Art Therapy Association.

Tenured and tenure-track faculty in the Art Therapy and Counseling Department teach graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The faculty member will contribute to the SAIC community through original studio/scholarly research; participate in shared leadership in the development of critical scholarship and curricular innovation in the department; participate in graduate student advising, admissions events, committee work and special projects; and participate in the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development, departmental administration, and school governance.
A master’s degree in art therapy with ATR-BC credentials by the start of employment is required. A doctoral degree is preferred. Candidates must have substantial clinical experience in art therapy and counseling practice, and have demonstrated expertise in scholarly, or studio professional practice. Prior teaching, supervisory, and administrative experience is preferred.
The department of art therapy and counseling invites applications from candidates with a strong interest in art therapy and counseling research that complements the department's social justice, critical theories of difference and disability justice frameworks. The ideal candidate will bring a strong clinical background with an interest in critical pedagogy, interdisciplinary approaches to art therapy, and emerging forms of contemporary, culturally relevant art therapy education. Candidates with strong clinical practitioner backgrounds are encouraged.
The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
