The College of Architecture + Planning is pleased to lead a new cluster hire initiative at the University of Utah focused on the theme of Resilient Places for an Aging Society. Together with the School of Medicine, the College of Health, the College of Nursing and the College of Social Work, this strategic effort aims to build upon existing strengths at the university and hire four new interdisciplinary faculty to catalyze an interdisciplinary translational research cluster addressing this theme. This cluster will engage in the implementation and evaluation of place-based interventions designed to enable the adaptive capacity of older adults to live healthier lives.

This search seeks an ambitious, collaborative-minded tenure-track Assistant or Associate (potentially with tenure) Professor who will have an appointment in the Department of City and Metropolitan Planning, or the School of Architecture (as appropriate). Appointments in the School of Architecture may have teaching obligations associated with the School’s architecture or multidisciplinary design programs. The ideal candidate’s scholarship will: 1) focus on translational research with a health promotion focus; 2) relate to comorbid chronic conditions associated with aging; and 3) be able to be discussed in relationship to explanatory theories such as allostatic load. Previous demonstrable collaboration with others beyond their own discipline is essential. Potential research areas include but are certainly not limited to:
• Socio-environmental determinants of Healthy Aging (mental & physical);
• Urban Planning for Active Living and Healthy Eating;
• Urban Design for Mental and Physical Health;
• Aging-in-Place and Placed-based Initiatives to Encourage It;
• Inclusive Design for Aging and Disability; and
• Smart Homes and linkages to Gerotechnology.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a full load as determined by their assigned unit, but inclusive in this load will be two courses related to the theme of Resilient Places for an Aging Society (those courses may also need to meet certain accreditation learning objectives). The candidate will be expected to join the Center on Aging at the University of Utah and to engage in collaborative grantsmanship and dissemination connected to this cluster hire initiative.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Architecture, Planning, Design, or a related field prior to the beginning of the 2018 fall semester. Preferred qualifications include a record of both publication and grantsmanship; prior teaching experience; a professional degree in one of these three professions; and publication in a health-related area.

The College of Architecture + Planning place-based vision for the future of architecture, design, and planning education is at the leading edge. The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of faculty members who have shaped a culture highly supportive of innovation and collaboration exemplified by our research centers: the Metropolitan Research Center, Center for Ecological Planning and Design, and Consortium for Dark Sky Studies. The School of Architecture has strengths in urban design, sustainability (including historic preservation), and community engagement (exemplified by its award-winning Design Build BLUFF program). Our fledgling Multidisciplinary Design program is known for its engagement with disciplines ranging from Business and Engineering to Medicine and the Humanities and hosts the interdisciplinary Spark Initiative. The Department of City and Metropolitan Planning engages in innovative inquiry in regard to urban sprawl, transportation, and resilience planning and hosts an innovative undergraduate degree in Urban Ecology both on the Salt Lake City and Songdo (South Korea) campuses. It is also a well-known leader in innovative community-engagement processes.
