APAEP offers a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies to incarcerated individuals. IDSC 1010 is the foundational course in their Interdisciplinary Studies core sequence. The course description is: “Open to any Auburn University student, this course is designed to provide in-depth exploration of your strengths, interests, and abilities. If you don’t know exactly what you want to do as a career, or how to get there, this is the course for you. In IDSC 1010, you will learn methods for discovering and creating career opportunities while you hone interview and presentation skills. You will study personality types in order to better understand what drives you and learn how knowing your preferences and tendencies can empower your personal and professional choices. This knowledge will help you to understand others, and will assist you in navigating relationships at work and at home. You will use techniques like career prototyping to explore potential careers and then use the results of that exploration to design the best degree path for you. You will work with your IDSC advisor to develop a plan of study that lays the groundwork for your career. Students who wish to continue into the upper division IDSC program must earn a C or better in this course.”

The course outcomes for IDSC 1010 are listed below:
  • Gain a closer sense of identity/connection with the Auburn academic community and understand the different degree and concentration options available at AU.
  • Learn about Meyers-Briggs personality types and how knowledge of personality preferences can be used to make better educated personal and professional choices.
  • Be able to summarize the skills needed for particular career choices and show how specific coursework can improve those skills.
  • Learn a framework that supports professional development, now and in the future.
  • Acquire methods for discovering and creating career opportunities.
  • Clearly position student education and background in the marketplace.
  • Integrate career experiences with professional vision.
  • Develop a preliminary post-graduation plan/vision.
  • Lay the groundwork for an IDSC curriculum plan (to be completed in the first half of IDSC 2190 or 2193).
  • Learn an essential overview of interdisciplinary systems thinking.
  • Learn and improve presentation skills.
 
The position requires weekly in-person classroom instruction and attendance at a mandatory teacher-training session prior to the start of the Fall semester. The Auburn Fall 2024 semester is Aug 19-Dec 13.
