The College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide announces an exciting new strategic initiative to develop a world-class flagship program in Emergency Services. As part of this initiative, COAS will be conducting a cluster faculty hire over the next few years that is inclusive of a broad range of disciplines that encompass the Emergency Services area of study. Upon completion, it is envisioned that this faculty focus group will include expertise from areas such as physics, chemistry, risk management, statistics, operations research, communications, economics, and psychology. Currently, COAS is inviting applications and nominations for the first two positions in this Emergency Services cluster hire, including this call for an Associate/Full Professor in the Department of Security and Emergency Services (SES).

COAS seeks a dynamic, nationally recognized academic leader who will partner with the COAS faculty to lead a focus area in Emergency Services, which will consist of new faculty positions across COAS departments that collectively (with existing faculty) will solidify a strong group of expertise in the broad interdisciplinary area of Emergency Services. This group will work to develop a flagship program in Emergency Services, beginning with the implementation of a new Master’s degree program that is grounded in innovative and nationally-recognized research led by the faculty contributing to this new COAS focus area. The successful candidate will fill a critical leadership role within the College and across the Worldwide campus, with the responsibility and resources to create a vibrant, growing program to fill a nationally identified need. The appointee will lead all efforts associated with developing interdisciplinary graduate degree programs in Emergency Services, including recruiting new faculty, establishing industry and other external partnerships, and leveraging opportunities to work with departments across the University in a co-curricular team environment. Reporting to the SES Department Chair, the position will have a reduced teaching load to accommodate responsibilities of leadership, program development, and managing activities of an interdisciplinary team. This position will bring with it a strong package of resources necessary to pursue these strategic priorities of SES and the College.
The Department of Security and Emergency Services currently offers a BS in Emergency Services that has seen remarkable growth, now serving over 180 undergraduate majors. The program is highly acclaimed, recently receiving the #1 ranking from Best Colleges for Online Emergency Services Undergraduate Programs. The BS-ES also is a recognized degree program of Fire Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) and carries accreditation from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). COAS has approved the development of a MS in Emergency Services, as part of the new College Strategic Directions that were ratified by the faculty in October 2017. Anticipated start date for the first cohort of Master’s students is Fall 2019.

COAS offers four bachelor’s degrees (Communication, Homeland Security, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Emergency Services) and two master’s degrees (Cybersecurity Management & Policy and Human Security & Resilience), with more planned for the near future. Departments in the College are: Security and Emergency Services; English, Humanities and Communications; Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences; and, Social Sciences and Economics. In addition to degree programs, COAS provides over 2,000 sections of general education courses as part of every degree program at Embry-Riddle Worldwide, with a focus on developing students’ critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, communication, scientific literacy, cultural literacy, and lifelong personal growth skills. The Worldwide campus has an enrollment of 23,000 full-time equivalent students, delivering courses globally online via Canvas, synchronously via EagleVision to both homes and classrooms, face-to-face at over 130 locations, and in a blended format. Embry-Riddle Worldwide earned the #1 ranking in 2017 for Best Online Bachelor’s programs from U.S. News & World Report.
