Position overview
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2024-25/july-2024-scales/t24-b.pdf. The current base salary range for this position is $61,300-$73,000. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Anticipated start: August 1, 2024

Position duration: 1 year appointment with a possibility of renewal.

Position description

The Department of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant/Associate Specialist in the Gopnik Cognitive Development Lab directed by Professor Alison Gopnik. The Assistant Specialist will assist with conducting interdisciplinary research. Projects may span from visual perceptual studies to classic causal-learning tasks.
Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting experiments with young children - including responding appropriately to unexpected situations in order to collect high quality data
  • Recruiting new testing sites, and maintain existing relationships
  • Maintain the PIs human subjects protocols
  • Ensure smooth running of the lab, including training undergraduate research assistants

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with and knowledge of experimental design for experiments with both children and adults
  • Good interpersonal skills, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative setting, and communicate effectively with members of the laboratory, parents, preschool administrators and teachers, and museum administrators
  • Must be an independent, highly motivated, and resourceful worker.
  • Experience with developmental testing with 1.5 to 8-year-olds
  • Experience with humans subjects protocol amendments
  • Experience running studies on Amazon Mechanical Turk
