(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position. Continuation will be dependent on funding, job performance, and continued need for the appointment.)

LOCATION: The extension office is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The area to be served is East Baton Rouge parish. The position will be housed in East Baton Rouge Parish which is located in south central Louisiana with a population of approximately 440,000 residents. The parish has over 150 public, private and parochial schools with a potential audience of over 40,000 youth. The candidate will serve East Baton Rouge parish working with schools and communities conducting nutrition education outreach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The assistant/associate area nutrition agent will provide 80% effort with youth educational programs in nutrition and related subjects for youth and families which are EFNEP targeted limited resource audiences. This employee will identify, select, recruit, train and involve volunteer leaders in conducting programs for targeted youth and adults, as planned and/or assigned. Emphasis will be placed on EFNEP school enrichment programs and conducting educational series focusing on nutrition and health. After-school outreach will also be emphasized as a program delivery mode. The agent will work jointly with other faculty and staff members (parish, region and state) with advisory committees in identifying local needs. In addition, the agent will conduct educational workshops, method demonstrations and other teaching activities for volunteers and targeted limited resource audiences on nutrition and health. A focus of the programming efforts will be to conduct educational programs on wellness to combat youth and adult obesity in group settings to target audiences. Additionally, the candidate will work 20% focusing on general nutrition programming. Incumbent will support all LSU AgCenter nutrition programs including but not limited to the selected programs that will be used; Dining with Diabetes, Eat Smart, Live Strong for Older Adults, Faithful Families: Eating Smart and Moving More, Smart Portions, CATCH, Kids in the Kitchen, and C.H.E.F. Camp. Employee will be expected to market the EFNEP and all nutrition programs in cooperation with parish EFNEP supervising agent, EFNEP staff, parish chairs and parish extension staffs, stakeholders, legislators, and other agencies. Employee must maintain an extensive record keeping system which involves evaluation of knowledge, skills, and behavior change for accountability purposes. As an extension employee, the agent must be willing to continue professional improvement. The incumbent is expected to be computer literate and able to complete an annual plan of work with teaching objectives and perform other tasks that may be assigned by supervisor(s).

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A baccalaureate degree in nutrition, community nutrition, family and consumer sciences, human ecology, vocational education or a closely related field from an accredited college or university is required. Strongly prefer: evidence of knowledge and experience in programming in limited resource communities and experience with extension or other community nutrition programs. Persons with only an undergraduate degree must have a minimum 2.5 overall grade-point average based on a 4-point grading system. If the applicant has pursued any graduate courses, the grade-point average of all graduate work must be at least 3.0 on a 4.0 system. The applicant must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Experience in recruiting, training and supervising adults and volunteers and experience in teaching and applying principles of leadership development to both youth and adult audiences is also desired. Knowledge of public relations and the ability to cope with change are highly desirable characteristics. Ability to work with and through others is essential as is the ability to function with minimum supervision. The successful candidate will exemplify a positive attitude and a passion to improve the lives of others. Some overnight, weekend and evening work may be required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: A personal automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required (travel allowance provided). Satisfactory completion of two specific graduate level extension courses (6 credit hours) is generally required in the first two years of employment. Additionally, a faculty member who does not have a related master’s degree must complete an additional 9 hours of related graduate level coursework in order to be promoted to associate agent and such promotion must occur in the first seven years of employment. An exception is that additional agent experience may be substituted for nine hours of coursework, but not for the two required courses.
