The B.Sc. in Social Development and Policy, within the School of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences at Habib University
(HU), invites applications from qualified candidates for Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (open rank) positions in the
interdisciplinary area of Social Development and Policy, to commence in Spring and Fall, 2019. The appointee will work
from HU’s campus (Karachi, Pakistan) and assume a combination of teaching, service and research responsibilities with
an annual course load of five.
Applications are welcome from all social science disciplines. A PhD in Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Political
Sciences, Development Studies, Gender/Women’s Studies, Education, Environmental studies or related disciplines;
while relevant academic service or administrative experience involving interdisciplinary work within a liberal arts
environment is also preferred. Field experience in Social Development Policy as well as familiarity with the South Asian
context will be considered as assets.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or the promise of excellence in teaching, scholarly research,
publications, service at various levels. The successful candidates will be expected to take a leadership role in the
development, review and delivery of the program. Ability to teach in multiple areas of social development and policy is
desirable. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as critical thinking and experiential education and
technology enhanced learning would be an advantage.
Applicants should submit a letter of application outlining relevant experience, an up-to-date curriculum vitae, a sample
of writing, examples of published research and/or a research statement, along with a teaching dossier which
demonstrates excellence and innovation in teaching (including student teaching evaluations and a teaching statement)
through the online faculty application form. Following preliminary selection, recommendations from three referees will
be required. Complete applications (with all required documents/information) will have precedence over incomplete
submissions. The application deadline is October 22nd 2018 for a January 2019 appointment, and February 15th 2019,
for an August/September 2019 start date. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications/experience.
About the Program:
The central vision of the B.Sc. in Social Development and Policy (SDP) program at HU is to nurture an inter-disciplinary
and comprehensive understanding of development and social change, both in theory and in practice- one that is firmly
rooted in an ethic of care and grounded in a sense of place. The undergraduate major combines rigorous classroom
training in the social sciences and humanities with reflexive and experiential learning through a fieldwork practicum.
Students are exposed to seminal ideas in social and economic thought. They explore how major development concerns
such as poverty, gender inequality, urbanization and human rights are shaped by historical forces and processes of
