Singapore Management University (SMU) is seeking to appoint a senior scholar as the Dean of the School of Social Sciences (SOSS).

One of five autonomous universities in Singapore, SMU was established in 2000 as a specialised university. SMU’s vision is to be an iconic global-city university in Asia that excels in tackling the world’s complexities, impacting humanity positively and producing leaders through its transformative education and multi-disciplinary research. The university houses six schools in the areas of Accountancy, Business, Economics, Information Systems, Law and Social Sciences and has about 10,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, over 350 faculty members across six schools, and over 16,000 alumni. SMU’s city campus is a state of the art facility located in the heart of downtown Singapore, fostering strategic linkages with businesses, government and the wider community.

School of Social Sciences

Established in 2007, SOSS pioneered the very first multi-disciplinary social sciences programme in Singapore. Today, the school offers the Bachelor of Social Sciences with two programmes: (i) Psychology, Political Science and Sociology (PPS) which is multidisciplinary and at the same time allows students to major in one of the disciplines and (ii) Politics, Law and Economics (PLE), which is a joint initiative with the Schools of Law and Economics. The school also offers three multi-disciplinary second majors in Public Policy and Public Management, Arts and Cultural Management and Global Asia. At the postgraduate level, the school offers the Masters in Tri-Sector Collaboration and both a PhD/ MPhil research degree in Psychology. SOSS has over 900 students and 40 faculty, and is an integral part of the SMU’s ecosystem. It is poised to play a key role in the undergraduate core curriculum.

As the academic, strategic and administrative leader of the school, the Dean will be expected to solidify the distinctiveness of the school’s offerings and further grow its programmes; guide and mentor faculty towards research excellence and deepen the school’s linkages with other SMU schools, regional and international academic partners, businesses and government.

The ideal candidate will have excellent academic and professional credentials to merit appointment as a full professor in social sciences and preferably from one of the disciplines at SOSS. The candidate must have a proven record of academic leadership in a school of similar scope and complexity, a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and inclusively with a wide range of internal and external partners and a demonstrated record of interest in Asia. Successful experiences with change management and the ability to galvanise a team are very important for this position. The right candidate will be a strategic thinker, excellent communicator and skilled negotiator.

Full evaluation of applications will start from January 2018. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The successful candidate will be expected to start in the latter half of 2018 or if possible earlier.

The application package should include (in electronic form): a cover letter describing relevant management and leadership experiences, teaching and research interests, and a full curriculum vitae. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for more information. The application package should be sent to the SOSS Dean Search Committee, Singapore Management University, at the following email address: SOSSDeanSearchComm@smu.edu.sg. For documents not available in electronic format, hard copies should be sent c/o the following address:
