Post-doctoral Fellowship in Tobacco Control

We are seeking up to two full-time post-doctoral fellows for research on tobacco control:

1. Fellowship in Risk Communicating and Tobacco Use: We are looking for candidates with a doctoral degree in social or behavioral science (or related field) with an interest in developing expertise in tobacco control research. The post-doc will join a successful and award-winning cohort of scholars in Dr. Noel Brewer’s Health Cognition and Behavior Lab, www.unc.edu/~ntbrewer/lab.html. The vision of our work is to contribute to tobacco control regulatory science by conducting an interrelated series of real world studies among vulnerable populations and across the developmental lifespan to improve communication and messages.

2. Fellowship in the Tobacco Retail Environment: We are looking for candidates with a doctoral degree in social or behavioral sciences or epidemiology (or a related field) with an interest in developing expertise in tobacco control research and tobacco-related health modeling. The post-doc will join the multi-university sponsored Advancing Science and Practice in the Retail Environment (ASPiRE) initiative. ASPiRE’s goal is to build a rigorous, scientific evidence base for effective tobacco control in the retail environment to reduce the public health burdens of tobacco use, including tobacco-related cancers and tobacco-related disparities. UNC’s ASPiRE work will be led by Drs. Shelley Golden and Kurt Ribisl, and will focus particularly on the health effects of tobacco retailer density.

Both post-doc positions will be at the University of North Carolina. Post-docs will assist with study design, implementation, data analysis, and interpretation and publication of study findings. In addition, postdoctoral trainees will strive to develop their own research questions related to tobacco control and will receive multidisciplinary training and mentorship from senior researchers at UNC. Postdocs will have the opportunity to participate in journal clubs, in-person speaker series, and webinar series. They will be encouraged to participate in grant writing courses and trainings. They will also receive support in developing a K-series or similar grant proposal during their time in the fellowship. In addition, travel funds will be available for postdocs to travel to 1-2 conferences a year to present their research.

Qualifications/Education: Qualified individuals must have completed a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree (in social or behavior science, epidemiology or related field).

Candidate Instructions: Applicants should submit: (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a two-page single spaced synopsis of their research interest/proposed work (1 inch margins), including a brief description of their career plans related to tobacco use prevention and control, and (3) two letters of recommendation. Apply at http://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/137452.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the positions could start between June and September 2018.

Salary: $55,000 to $60,000 per year plus benefits

Source of funding: Positions are contingent upon funding from National Institutes of Health (NIH)
