Assistant Professor of Anthropology


Position Category: Faculty - Tenure Track (FT)

Summary:

The Behavioral Science Department, Anthropology Program, of Utah Valley University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor that demonstrate a commitment to quality undergraduate teaching building from a program of research within anthropology.

Although candidates with a PhD. in anthropology are preferred, advanced ABD candidates will be considered with a firm commitment to completion by August 2018. Sub-discipline, topics, and geographical focus are open.

UVU's anthropology program participates in a multidisciplinary department as part of an undergraduate institution committed to quality teaching and engaged learning. The successful candidate will contribute to the further development of a program that has a strong record of student success.

This professional position requires teaching and advanced research in anthropology, as well as service to department, university, the field and community. The standard teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester.

Essential Duties: 80% teaching-related, 10% research, 10% service.

Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, 1-3 page statement of teaching philosophy, a summary of applicant's research agenda, and a letter from three professional references. If available, please include past course syllabi and student evaluations.

Required Qualifications:

ABD accepted with a firm commitment to completion by August 2018.
Professional skills in teaching, research, and writing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of an anthropological sub discipline (social-cultural, biological, archaeology, linguistics, or folklore), specialization in a set of important topics within the sub discipline as well as within a geographical area of anthropological interest.
  • Ability to create and prepare courses in anthropology.
  • Ability to teach effectively.
  • Ability to write professional level articles in anthropology.
  • Ability to work with faculty, students, and communities.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to contribute to development of an anthropology curriculum.
  • ability to translate the universitys core values and mission into professional activities.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching anthropology successfully at an open admissions college or university level, successful completion of anthropological research, ability in anthropological writing, demonstrable collegiality.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to stand for periods of time, communicate and teach students, lift at least 10 lbs.
