Summary:

The Behavioral Science Department, within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah Valley University, has an outstanding tenure-track opportunity for a teaching-focused individual with expertise in cognitive psychology to become an essential part of our growing faculty in the Fall of 2019. The psychology faculty is composed of energetic, collaborative academics who actively mentor our 1,400 undergraduate majors in the context of their scholarly activities. Our internationally recognized faculty is supported in their instructional activities by the Office of Teaching and Learning, an outstanding center for faculty development that has robust staff support for online/hybrid courses and possesses a well-equipped technology lab.

Workload expectations will be comprised of teaching (80%), research (10%), and institutional service (10%). Position requires an assigned teaching load of 24 credit hours during the academic year (approximately 12 credit hours each semestertypically a 4/4 load). Must design, prepare, and teach coursesdelivering content using meaningful and engaging methods with measurable course objectives. Expected to teach, manage, and supervise individuals and groups in a classroom setting via demonstrations, discussion, experiential learning activities, and visual aids as well as provide evaluation of learning through written and performance tests. Expected to hold regular office hours and maintaining a student-oriented approach to education.

Must be able to teach a night or weekend class, as needed.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with an appropriate degree in an earned doctorate in cognitive psychology, or closely related area, by the position start date. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.
Candidates must be able to teach Cognitive Psychology and at least one of the following courses: Human Lifespan Development, Infancy and Childhood Development, Adolescent Development, Adult Development, Introduction to Brain and Behavior, Sensation and Perception, Behavioral Neuroscience, Psychopharmacology, Research Methods, or Statistics.
Candidates must be able to teach a night or weekend class, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of subject matter and course content.
  • Demonstrate effective instructional pedagogy including teaching strategies and techniques.
  • Possess effective interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage, motivate, and evaluate students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and consistently orally and electronically with students.
  • Possess collegiality and a collaborative approach to working within the department.


Preferred Qualifications:

Although not required, preferred qualifications include an established history of excellence in teaching, experience with hybrid or online course delivery, conducting research with undergraduate students, participating in the scholarship of teaching and learning, or working collaboratively with other faculty both within and across departments. Candidates who do not have these qualifications should demonstrate their potential for obtaining some of these qualifications within their first few years as a pre-tenured faculty member.

Physical Requirements:

Frequent standing, sitting, and walking; continuous ability to see, hear, and speak; Able to lift up to 10 pounds; frequent fine hand manipulation as associated with the use of a computer.
