The Dean, College of Arts and Sciences (COAS), Arizona Campus, helps create and implement the strategic academic vision for the University and the Campus. The premise of this vision is that the University and Campus set the global standard of excellence in carefully chosen academic niches within engineering, aviation, space physics, business, and security and intelligence. This vision is based on a philosophy of total student development comprising intellect, spirit, character, values, grit, the ability to be formidable, and the desire to make a substantive difference in the world. This vision is based on the creation of knowledge by faculty and students through research and scholarship. This vision is based on applying and transmitting knowledge to government, industry, and the general public.
The COAS Dean is expected to facilitate externally funded research grants and contracts through the expertise of the COAS faculty. The COAS Dean also is expected to facilitate other faculty research and scholarship consonant with the University and Campus vision. As well, the COAS Dean will be expected to be successful in working with academic leadership and our Office of Development towards greater financial support of our endowment and of various Campus infrastructure projects. Sophisticated budgetary development and management is highly desirable. All this should occur within the primary context of maintaining superior teaching and learning for our students.
The COAS Dean is expected to facilitate integration of curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities; the development of innovative academic proposals, pedagogies and pedagogical platforms; recruitment, selection and nurturing of COAS faculty; maintenance of all COAS laboratories and related infrastructure; the seamless integration of COAS academics with traditional student affairs activities; and the seamless integration of COAS academics with enrollment management activities.
In support of strategic academic vision, the COAS Dean helps create and implement University and Campus academic policies, programs, and procedures. Directly reporting to the COAS Dean are the Chairs of Departments of Mathematics, Humanities and Communication, Physical Sciences, Safety Science, and Business; leaders of US Army and Air Force ROTC detachments; College Advisor; and the Chair of the General Education Committee. Other activities in support of strategic academic vision include compliance with accreditation criteria; a comprehensive assessment program for courses, academic majors, and other academic offerings; and the creation of catalog and other academic materials.
